M U N I C I PAL B U I L DIN G ""~""'* BROUGHAH A SPECIAL }ŒETI!\G of Council was held on THURSDAY, the FIFTH day of DECIDŒER, at EIGnT o'clock in the evening. PRESENT: Wm. G. Lawsol, in the Chair J.Sherman Scott Sidney S. J. Pugh Eilgar James J. S. Chapman Glenn Juliar; Robert L. Stewart L. T. Johnston,Clerl{ CouncjJ.J..or Stewart. Chairman of the Fire Comr.Iit tee, reported as follows, relative to the Volunteer firemeL of East Woodlands request for increased allow'ance. "Following the request of the South \~est Pickering volunteer fire brigaile for ircreased wages I have made the following inquiries. 1. From Mr. Dave IJowe of the Fire }[arshall' s Office I learr:ed that the request of our volunteers is neither ur.reasonable or out of line with other fire departments. He did suggest however, that the ideal system of remur.erating volunteer firemen was 01, a point or merit system. ? .... . I discussed the complete situation with the township fire chief ~w. Don Lynde and he corroboratèd Hr. Lowe's feelings in regard tê' ,vages. However it was Mr. Lynde's sentiments that there should be a sliding wage scale in relation to the man's responsibility and experience. I thought it might be interesting to council members to know the monetary costs we are considering this evening if the request of the volunteers is approved by this council. The fire dept.'s financial year as far as wages is concerned ends Nov. 30 so we have the current figures to work with. Under the present pay scale the township will pay this year $2596.75 to the volunteers, or an average of 23,00 per fire. Under the pial'! now under discussion we would volunteers or an average of $57~50 per call. of the' fire area are concerLed the mill rate slightly more than! mill. have paid $7091.00 to the As far as the ratepayers would be increased by .' t t f, I would like at this time to recommend at this time that next year's fire committee meet regularly with the various fire depts. so that if future requests come forward from the volunteers the fire committee will be ir a better position to 1eal first hand with the situation and there would be no need for hasty or urwise de~isions."
