A Meeting of Cour¡cil was held on TUESDAY. thè TWENTY-FIRST day of MAY, 1957,
at EIGHT o'clock in the evening.

CORRESPONDENCE
1. Department of Hi~hway~ Motor Vehicles Branch, advising that our
request for a 40 mile per hour speed limit through Dunbarton has
been sent to their Planning Division for study.
2. Copy of Minutes School Area No. 2 Boar~ April 8, 11, 22 and May 9.
3. Town of Ajax have referrèdour request for a joint meeting of Road
Committees, re boundary roads, to their Public Works Committee, but
they cannot meet our Council May 27th.
4. Town of Ajax advise they will agree to a Fire Agreement covering
North Harwood, Heron Park, Pickering Beach Road to a depth of 300
feet from Highway 401 to Base Line for Fifteen Hundred Dollars
($1,500.00) per year for ten (10) fires plus One Hundred and Twenty-
Five Dollars ($125.00) for extra calls retroactive to January 1, 1957.
This can be the basis for further discussions.
5. Jud~e Pritchard will hear Township arguments on Friday, May 24th at
3 P.M. relative to Township assessing Consumers' Gas Company for
Fifty per cent (50%) of their line on Base Line being a botlndary
Road. Mr. Hazzard will represent Council.
6. Fines for April - $ 175.91
7. Police Report for April - 196 Occurences
8. A. J. Thompson report on the Bell Septic Tank. Thinks now in good
shape but water run off should be directed from the Bell and other
lots.
9. Truant Officer advises Pickering Township primary pupils total 2,613
as of April.
10. G. H. Bray advises our Health Unit will commence July 1, 1957 when
local Board of Health, Medical Officer of Health, Sanitary Inspector
will cease to function. Dr. Loos has been advised this would commence
June 1st.
11. Mr. B. Cochrane, who has been ordered by Council to vacate Harpell's
shed on May 31, claims he cannot get into another house until August.
Wants permission to stay in present quarters until then.
12. A. J. Thompson has approved Kennel License for Saurensen, Concession 1
Lot 6 only when residence is established.
The following PERSONS, on MOTION, were heard.
Mr~_ Valleau appeared for his son-in-law who is building a home between his
two houses which have a set back of twenty feet (20 ft.) and asked that
his son-in-law's house be permitted to be built to conform with other two.
Council stated that new Building By-Law which will be heard by the Board
on May 31st will permit such set back.

Mr. Eilbeck. Department of Education, recreation branch, discussed
Township recreation and stated that this Township would receive no
further grants from them under present set-up because they felt that
the present Cowmittee did not represent the whole Township. He
recommended that group activities pay their own way as, in general,
in the past or that a survey be made with a view of starting fresh
in 1958.
Mr. Eilbeck distributed the "regulations" wherein grants would be
paid to this Municipality of up to Eighteen Hundred Dollars ($1,800.00)
for one-third salary of full or part time director or assistant and not
exceeding Six Hundred Dollars ($600.00) or twent~r-five percent of approved
maintenance.
The Reeve asked each Councillor to submit the name of the person in his
Ward who would be most suitable and agreeable to act on such a Committee,
for next meeting.
MOVED by Mr. Chapman, seconded by Mr. Julian, that Mr. B. Cochrane be permitted q
to stay in his present dwelling until August, 1957. CARRIED
BY-LAW NUMBER 2243
Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Stewart, moves for leave to introduce a By-Law of
the Township of Pickering to authorize the borrowing of $50,000.00, and that
same now be read a first time.
Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Julian, moves that By-Law Number 2243 to authorize
the borrowing of $50,000.00, be now read a second time, and that Council go
into Committee of the Whole thereon.
The Committee of the Whole arises and reports the By-Law as read.
Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Chapman, moves that the report of the Committee of
the Whole on By-Law Number 2243 be adopted, and that the said By-Law be now
read a Third time and PASSED; that the Reeve and Clerk sign the same, and
t.he Seal of the Corpora ti on be affixed thereto. CARRIED
CLERK'S INSTRUCTIONS
Get fifteen copies of Project Planning report on Whitevale proposed
subdivision.
On MOTION of Mr. Scott, the meeting adjourned.
