C. Celebre welcomed everyone to the meeting and asked if members had any additional items for the agenda.

3.1) Update on Peters Mathews Plaque Relocation B. George provided members with an overview of the Peter
Mathews Plaque, outlining the location. She also provided members with a brief history of the Mathews family and read the wording on the plaque, noting that the current location was geographically correct in terms of location of the site. She also noted that the current location does not get much foot traffic,
with very few residents still living in Brougham. B. George indicated four possible options as follows:
Leave the plaque in its current location
Relocate the plaque to the Bentley House
Relocate the plaque to the Pickering Museum Village
Leave the plaque in its current location and investigate the possibility of the City creating an additional plaque to be located at the Museum
C. Celebre noted she would contact the Museum to discuss the
possibility of erecting a plaque as well as look into the ownership of the property where the plaque is currently located. Discussion ensued and it was questioned whether there was
any proposed development in the area. It was also noted that it
would be quite costly to have the wording on the plaque changed, in the event it was relocated and no longer site specific.
3.2) 345 Whitevale Road
C. Celebre provided members with a copy of the Committee of Adjustment public hearing notice for 345 Whitevale Road which proposes to permit an increase in the allowable height for a
detached garage. C. Celebre advised the Committee that a
heritage permit for the construction of the subject garage was supported by the Committee in September. C. Celebre reminded the Committee that the increase in height
is slightly higher than originally proposed due to the request by
staff to change the roofline to a more appropriate pitch and profile. She noted that the guidelines do not speak to specific measurements, only storeys and that the proposed garage

process of a minor variance application and that applications are reviewed and evaluated on an individual basis and the Committee of Adjustment considers the comments from the
applicant, area residents, staff and the Heritage Committee before making a decision. 3.3) Workplan Updates
Discussion took place with respect to the creation of additional heritage districts such as Dunbarton and Fairport. It was noted that in order to initiate this, it should be added to the Committee’s workplan.
B. George noted members should refer to the Heritage Conservation Districts book which is part of their Ontario Heritage Tool Kit, as it contains a lot of information on the process involved with the creation of a heritage conservation district.
Discussion ensued and C. Celebre noted that the creation of Districts is a good tool for heritage preservation when there is pressure for development in these areas, however there are challenges and difficulties involved in creating Districts. She
noted examples from various other municipalities and stated that community and Council support was an important factor. B. George noted the importance of promotion, and the need to highlight Pickering’s current designated buildings.
C. Celebre stated that she would be meeting with members of the Cultural Advisory Committee to discuss working together with respect to promotion of heritage in Pickering. She also noted that part of the Cultural Strategic Plan was to install entry
signage to Whitevale next year as well as street signs the following year to highlight heritage. C. Sopher noted that Whitevale has already completed some signage in the area.
B. George suggested that the Committee reach out to the Whitevale Resident’s Association to assist with outreach programs.
Members also discussed concerns over losing a number of
barns in Pickering. It was also noted that the Hole in the Wall

would tie in nicely with the creation of Dunbarton as a heritage conservation district.
It was the general consensus to add the creation of Dunbarton as a heritage conservation district onto the 2017 Workplan.

4. New Business
4.1) Heritage Brochures C. Celebre passed around brochures prepared by the Town of Whitby highlighting their heritage buildings as well as walking
tours. She noted that they had offset costs by contacting local
businesses and had also applied for grants. Discussion ensued with respect to the new technologies today which make it easier to preserve heritage, such as digital
walking tours. She suggested this could be pursued for the hamlets as well as the waterfront. 4.2) Tom Thompson
B. George provided members with a brief overview of the history of Tom Thompson. She noted the City was working on ways to commemorative his life, and noted that this would include lectures. She noted that she would advise the members once the details are available. She also noted they
were still trying to determine if in fact he was born in the building, which would add to the heritage significance. B. George noted she would work on getting contacts and questioned members if they would be willing to help track down
leads, possibly by creating a sub-committee to work on this. She also noted she would contact John Sabean to inquire if he has spoken with the owners with respect to designation. 4.3) Street Names
J. Dempsey inquired about the process for naming in streets in Pickering, in particular with the upcoming development of Seaton.
C. Celebre noted that the City has a procedure for street naming and would follow up with the City Development department in this regard.

5. Other Business
6.1) C. Celebre reminded members to sign up for the
November 24th seminar in Oshawa. She noted they could let her know if they are available to attend, and she would sign them up.
6.2) C. Sopher noted that the Whitevale Arts & Cultural Centre
would be available to use as a venue.
6.3) C. Celebre advised members that she had available for viewing a video conference session from Ontario Heritage. She had forwarded this onto the members and it was the general consensus that they would view it at home.
