Brenner D. Dickerson, Chairman R. Johnson E. Pistritto D. Ryan S. Senis ALSO PRESENT: T. Quinn N. Carroll B. Taylor P. Wyger - General Manager - Director of Planning - Town Clerk - Town Solicitor (I) A UTHORITY TO MEET IN CAMERA Resolution #338/97 Moved by Councillor Johnson Seconded by Councillor Pistritto That pursuant to Section 55(7) of the Municipal Act, R.S.O. 1990, c M.45, as amended, the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Pickering hereby resolves to conduct a meeting to consider matters of litigation, personnel and a proposed property transaction. CARRIED The Town Solicitor reported that the ownership oflands held by MPL Oakwood Holdings is in question and reported on securities that the Town holds with respect to these lands. 8 . 8 2 Resolution #339/97 Moved by Councillor Johnson Seconded by Councillor Senis That Mr. Chung be authorized to act on behalf of the Town of Pickering by paying into Court $45,000 that the Town holds in securities with respect to MPL Oakwood Holdings. CARRIED The Town Solicitor reported that e. DeGraauw is in good standing with respect to the realty taxes on the Spring Creek Golf Course and she was asked to investigate the status of the business taxes. The Town Solicitor requested permission to commence a claim of$3,798.06 with respect to a fire at the Recreation Complex. Resolution #340/97 Moved by Councillor Senis Seconded by Councillor Ryan That the Town Solicitor be authorized to commence a claim in the amount of$3,798.06 respecting a fire that occurred at the Recreation Complex as a result of work carried out by a private contractor. CARRIED The Town Solicitor reported that a lift on the McKean lands was to be removed in 30 days following the sale of these lands and although the lift has been sold, it has not been removed. Resolution #341/97 Moved by Councillor Ryan Seconded by Mayor Arthurs That the Town Solicitor be authorized to remove the lift from the McKean lands. CARRIED Resolution #342/97 Moved by Councillor Johnson Seconded by Councillor Senis That Confidential Parks and Facilities Report 5/97 be adopted with the amendment that the word "vendor" be substituted with the word "agent". CARRIED 3 Resolution #343/97 Moved by Councillor Johnson Seconded by Councillor Pistritto That this Council rise from the In Camera Meeting at 7:39 p.m. CARRIED 8 Resolution #344/97 Moved by Councillor Dickerson Seconded by Councillor Brenner To request leave to introduce a motion respecting the naming of a park. CARRIED Resolution #345/97 Moved by Councillor Dickerson Seconded by Councillor Brenner WHEREAS the sudden, unexpected and tragic accident which claimed the life of a loving young mother and a beautiful daughter, who served as a role model to the world, has left untold millions of people around the globe feeling grief and sadness; and WHEREAS the bubbling enthusiasm, energy and courage displayed by Princess Diana has also touched virtually every resident of Pickering; and . WHEREAS while many of us find it difficult to express our sorrow in so many words, who amongst us is without opinion of Lady Di; and WHEREAS it is an opinion formed over many years of watching the Princess unselfishly sacrifice her privacy to assist those with leprosy, with AIDS, to homeless and sick children, to the disabled and to the veterans; and WHEREAS her worldwide campaign to forever forbid the use of land mines due to their debilitating and terrifYing effect on civilians led the worlds nations just last week to reach an accord banning their use and naming the accord in her everlasting memory; and WHEREAS the residents of Pickering are also asking that Lady Di be remembered by present and future generations in a very special way; and WHEREAS the Town is in the process of creating a spectacular new park which will be extensively used by children, by teenagers, by adults and is accessible to all with disabilities; and WHEREAS this park is located in the heart of Pickering, next to our civic recreation complex, it is therefore suggested that this area be named in her memory; 8 NOW THEREFORE the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Pickering hereby directs that the community-youth park be known as "Princess Diana Park" and that a proclamation of such be respectfully forwarded to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Prince William, Prince Harry and to the Spencer family; and THAT we share their grief and will cherish her moment amongst us.
