HomeMy WebLinkAboutAugust 7, 2001 (Special) SPECIAL COUNCIL MEETING _ A Special Meeting of the Pickering City Council was held on Tuesday, August 7, 2001 at 9:08 p.m. PRESENT: Mayor Wayne Arthurs COUNCILLORS: M. Brenner M. Holland R. Johnson B. McLean D. Pickles D. Ryan ALSO PRESENT: .... T. Quinn E. Buntsma N. Carroll G. Paterson T. Melymuk A. Greentree - Chief Administrative Officer - Director, Operations & Emergency Services - Director, Planning & Development - Director, Corporate Services & Treasurer - Division Head, Corporate Projects & Policy Division - Supervisor, Legislative Services (I) RESOLUTIONS Resolution #94/01 Moved by Councillor McLean Seconded by Councillor Pickles WHEREAS Public Works Canada has indicated that it will be demolishing Tullis Cottage and Ever Green Villa which are located in Lot 19, Concession 6 at the southwest corner of Brock Road and Concession 7 Road; and WHEREAS Tullis Cottage was constructed in the 1840's and Ever Green Villa in the early 1850's by members of the Barclay family, and are considered to be of national and historical significance to the City of Pickering as a reflection of Pickering's earliest settlers; and ~ WHEREAS Tullis Cottage and Ever Green Villa, which were owned at the time by a descendent of Elder George Barclay, were expropriated by the Federal Government in the early 1970' s; and WHEREAS Tullis Cottage continues to be occupied and leased by descendents of George Barclay who have indicated that they are willing to upgrade Tullis Cottage and have further indicated that they are willing to purchase the property back from the Federal Government; --2-- NOW THEREFORE the Council of the Corporation of the City of Pickering hereby requests that Heritage Canada designate Tullis Cottage and Ever Green Villa as being of historical significance to the City of Pickering; and - FURTHER THAT the Minister of Transport, the Honourable David Collenette be requested to order a moratorium on the demolition of Tullis Cottage and Ever Green Villa pending the designation of these properties by Heritage Canada; and FURTHER THAT a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honourable Sheila Copps, Minister of Canadian Heritage, Dan McTeague, MP, Janet Ecker, MPP, Public Works Canada, Transport Canada, Heritage Pickering and the Pickering Historical Society.
