RECOMMENDATION:
That Report CS 08/99 of the Director, Corporate Services & Treasurer be received and that the
write-off of taxes uue to change in the assessment as provideu under Section 442 of the
M lInicipal Act, R.S.O. 1990, as amended be approveu.

AUTHORITY:
The Municipal Act, Section 442, R.S.O. 1990, as amended
FINANCIAL IMPLICATIONS:
If approved, the write-off of taxes as contained in this repoli represents a gross cost of
$78,583.84, with a net cost to the Town of approximately $11,667.88, the balance being charged
back to the Region of Durham and the School Boards.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:

BACKGROUND:

The reduction of taxes due to fire, demolition, exemption, assessment change or clerical error, is
provided for under Section 442 of the Municipal Act. Write-offs of this nature are considered
norl11al in the conduct of business. The write-ofrs arc [or the 1998 and 1999 taxation year and
will be charged to the 1999 budget account 2134, Provision [or Uncollectable Taxes.

The LK Properties and Peg Perego adjustments are duc to an assessment rcalty tax class changc
from industrial to commercial. The Walnut Grove Plaza property was assessed ineonoectly (too
high) by the Provincial Assessment Office.
