Accessibility Advisory Committee Meeting

Danielle (from the Pickering News Advertiser) in attendance, as
she is doing a series on Accessibility Issues. This will be the
first part of a series, which may come out sometime in June.
Councillor Pickles gave an overview of the committee, and
Committee Members spoke about Accessibility as they see it:
- Accessibility is a Municipal responsibility (regulatory role)
Coordinate and administer an Annual Accessibility Plan
Committee's Role is to advise Council on Accessibility
Issues
Committee reviews Site Plans / looking at Site Plan
Guidelines.
Looking at planning residential/commercial
developments with regards to accessibility issues.
- Opportunity to be on local advisory committee is really
important. Must be able to be able to participate in our
community.
Progress has been made over the years
- Terminology / attitudes have improved over the years
Planning culture has to include accessibility, and has to
be part of the way we do business.
- We have a bi 'ob to do to reach out to the avera e

resident. Needs media to spread the word.
- At the end of the day: Never Give Up! People with
disabilities are part of the fabric of this community.
- Accessibility is just not physical disabilities, but for all
others as well (sight / hearing etc)
