HomeMy WebLinkAboutApril 27, 1976 - 21 - 6/76 TOWN OF PICKERING MUSEUM BOARD A meeting of the Pickering Museum Board was held on TUESDAY, APRIL 27th 1976 at 8:00 P.M. PRESENT: Councillor J. Anderson w. Biernacki WIn. Clark F. Conant B. Davies - Chairman D. McLean Councillor K. Spratley J.P. Myslik - Secretary 1. CORRESPONDENCE a) - In a letter dated April 12th 1976, Mr. Harold Burk indicàted that he would be in the area at a later date than previously envisaged. Mr. Mr. Clark met with Mr. Burk and he indicated that he was enthused about the " remembrance of the Green family in the museum at the proposed new site. He indicated that a water wheel display would be a very good idea. Nothing definite was decided. b) Canadian Broadcasting Corporation The C.B.C. in a letter dated April 14th 1976, requested the use of the Museum Blacksmith Shop. MOTION 188/76 Moved by Councillor Spratley, seconded by WIn. Clark that the Museum Board confirm the actions of the Chairman relative to the fees and the approval of a group wishing to use the Museum and that a standard form be drawn up for this purpose. CARRIED c) Greenwood Arts and Crafts .J - d) In a letter dated April 6th 1976 Mr. George-Martin suggested a possible Arts and Crafts progræmme at the new museum site. MOTION 189/76 Moved by F. Conant, seconded by D. McLean that the letter of Mr. George Martin, dated April 6th 1976, concerning the Greenwood Arts and Crafts be tabled and that the item be referred to the Technical Advisory Committee in the meantime for recommendation. CARRIED J Direction was given that a letter similar to the one sent to the Greenwood Store be sent to Mr. Martin. Steve Payne Mr. Steve Payne applied for a position at the Museum in restoration work. Since it is important that young people preserve the skills of the past it was suggested that Mr. Payne could work with Mr. Clark on restoration. This would apply to items approved by the Board for restoration. - 22 - 6/76 2. REPORTS a) Administrator The Administrator indicated that. a considerable amount of work has been accomplished at the Museum, A sign as been erected at the new site. The Venturers and Scouts are to go to the new site to help clean-up some of the under brush on May l5th 1976. He suggested that the Claremont Scouts be invited to help in the restoration of some of the implements. It was indicated that Mr. Theo ~son who is a graphic artist volunteered to do the graphics and the lettering for the new site. b) Restoration of Artifiacts The Hyraulic Ram as been restored. Some more work has been done on the McCormick-Deering Tractor. There are hopes of getting an instruction book on the Case Steam Engine. Massey-Harris have provided a book on the Massey-Harris Tractor -Direction was given to the Administrator that the pump at the Museum be fixed and that the well be pumped out if necessary. D. McLean contacted the Federal authorities and they indicated that fence rails are available to the Museum. 3. NEW BUSINESS a) Training Programme Discussion of training programme to be set-up for the Guide Captain and Tour Guides. The printed materials and tour of the Museum are to be given to the Guides on Thursday, April 29th 1976. The slide presentation will be shown to the Guides on Monday, May 3rd 1976. It was suggested that the kit also be given to the demonstrators. b) Adamson Brick Yard J It was indicated that many buildings in the area have been built from bricks made at the Adamson Brick Yard which is located in the north half of lot 7, Concession 5, just south of #7 highway and west of the creek. The yard has historic interest and some study has already been made of it. A letter is to be sent to the owner indicating that the Museum would like to be able to enter the site for this purpose. 4. OTHER BUSINESS a) Report of the Director of Recreation and Transportation In a report dated April 22nd 1976 the Director of Recreation and Tranportation recommended that some money be made available for material and patterns for the tour guides. - 23 - 6/76 4 OTHER BUSINESS (Continued) a) Report of the Director of Recreation and Transportation (Continued) MOTION 190/76 Moved by Councillor Anderson, seconded by D. McLean that the recommendation of the Director of Recreation and Transportation concerning uniforms for the tour guides as indicated in his report of April 22nd 1976, be accepted and that the expenditure of $100.00 for materials for the tour guides be approved. CARRIED b) Flower Beds - Museum It was indicated that the Horticultural Society of Harwood School is willing to take care of the Flower Beds at the Museum. c) J- d) e) f) g) - h) i) It was indicated that Mr. W.T. Beddall owns the site of the North Greenwood Dam. The millstones: of this dam are apparently still on the site. It was recommended that a letter be sent to Mr. Beddall indicating that the Museum would be interested in locating the millstone. It was indicated that news photographers were present when the Boy Scouts were cleaning up the Museum grounds. School Tours The local school boards should be contacted concerning school tours to the Pickering Museum. Medallions '&""" ) 7Iprl/¡¡;! ' C<\", ' ,! It was suggested'that the aluminum medallions be sold at a price of $5.00. This was an appraisal given by a person who is knowledgeable in coins and medallions. Technical Advisory Committee Meeting It was indicated that the next Technical Advisory Committee Meeting will be held a week later on May 12th 1976. Mr. OWen requested this later date for the meeting in order to have more material ready for the Technical Advisory Committee. Mrs. G. Mowbray is be contacted to see whether she as arranged for the manning of the buildings at the Museum opening. Fire Extinguishers MOTION 191/76 ~ Moved by K. Spratley, seconded by WIn. Clarke that two extra fire extinguishers be ordered for the Museum. CARRIED - 24 - 6/76 5. NEXT MEETING The next meeting is to be held on May 18th 1976. 6. ADJOURNMENT Moved by Councillor J.
