PRESENT: Mr. T.W. Beddall Mr. Wm. Clark Mr. R. Cooper Mr. D. McLean Mr. R. Miller Mr. C. Purcell Mr. G. Shewan Mr. K. Spratley (Chairman) t1r. G. Waters Mr. J.P. Myslik (Secretary) 1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES 2. 3. MOVED by R. Cooper, seconded by G. Shewan that the minutes of the meeting of June 11th 1975 be adopted. CARRIED TOUR OF THE MUSEUM SITE The members of the Committee were taken on a tour through the various buildings of the Museum Site. They also had the opportunity to view a considerable number of the artifacts and machines. NEW BUSINESS Theme of the Museum Two general areas of this topic were discussed. a) Problems and possibilities of a living Museum: 1. Security- This kind of Museum set-up would be harder to control and supervise. 2. Training Program - The other difficulty with a living Museum is the fact that there are very few people who are skilled in the crafts that were prevalent in the previous century. An arrangement would have to be made whereby interested young people could be trained by the older craftsmen on an apprenticeship- type basis. This would be a means whereby senior citizens could be kept active and useful in the community. These older craftsmen could also serve as security on the Museum Grounds. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - .- r , . - 4 - 2/75 Item 3 contd. 4. 5. It was furthermore noted that the knowledge of the older members of the community should be recorded, possibly on tape, in order to preserve the vast fund of Historical data which they have and which will be lost if the data is not recorded. In order to interest young people in this kind of program, it would be essential that the people in the program be paid on a par with other people in the business world. b) The other area which was discussed was the possibility of an on-going type of Museum, especially in view of the very large time span encompassing the collection in the present Museum. This could be done on the basis of a time-street, whereby an individual walking through the Museum would actually be witnessing the evolution of history from Pioneer Days. Another way in which the on-going type of Museum could be treated would be by means of successive nuclei. Edmonton is developing a Museum on this basis: first an Indian Village then a Hudson's Bay Company Store, subsequently a farm setting, then a Town setting and ultimately oil rigs. The incipient Agricultural Museum of Ontario is also considering this idea by depicting a Pioneer Farm, a farm in the 1860's, a farm in the 1890's, in the 1920's and ultimately in the 1940is. It was decided that this theme could be discussed at a later date when the new Museum Site is inspected. DATE OF NEXT MEETING July 9th 1975 - 2.00 p.m. at the Greenwood Site. ADJOURNMENT MOVED by R. Miller, seconded by G. Shewan that the meeting adjourn at 5.20 p.m. CARRIED
