This item can be considered in two ways: as a conceptual approach and as a concrete approach. i) Conceptual Approach The Museum has to tell a story of the area; something that is unique to that particular part of the country. The story can be conveyed to childred especially by means of: School Tours Arts and Crafts Classes A School used as a school within the Museum Complex ii) Concrete Approach This approach considers the practical means of getting people to the Museum and through the Museum. School Bus Approach and Parking There should be a means of school buses coming reasonably close to the entrance of the museum so that children do not have to goa long distanc~ especially in inclem:mt weather. There should also be ample parking space and access to the museum for those who come by automobile. ,~ ~ ~ - 17 .. 9/75 ..... 2. NEW BUSINESS (Continued) ii) Concrete Approach (Cont.) Reception School visits to a museum should be prepared even prior to the visit itself by means of discussions held within the classroom. The reception at the museum can be handled inathreefold manner: A brochure illustrating the layout of the museum with some, simp¡e explanations about the museum. There may be an entrance building which need not be too elaborate where admission fees are paid, etc. An Orientation Building - This type of building is quite elaborate and also quite costly. It would house various facilities such as the Administration facility of the museum - an audio-visual room or rooms and also perhaps an exhibit area. In the discussion it was pointed out that audio-visual means are great for orientation but they need to be controlled. Tour Guides Tour guides are necessary even if people as demonstrators are stationed at various locations throughout the museum. Guides ~ '.' Guides need to have a regular training programme. Even if they are volunteers a training programme is necessary in order that they be able to give the proper information and that they be able to take the tour through the museum at a regular schedule. Guided tours are given generally only to children. Canteen A canteen or snack bar is very useful from two points of view. It supplies a very important need especially with children and it also supplies the museum with added useful revenue. For nice weatheü tables should be supplied outside where children, or people generally, may be able to have their lunches. As a general comment it was pointed out that the more children who can participate in various activities or functions in the museum, th~ more successful the museum programme will be. .- . · ' (' - 18 ... 9/75 2. NEW BUSINESS (Continued) b) Further Deliberations on the concept of the Museum - at the New Site As had been discussed at previous meetings it was pointed out that the time street concept seemed to be very interesting and a very good solution to the type of museum that exists at Brougham. It was also pointed out that the storm sewers, sanitary sewers, watermains and electricity could be put along the street in preparation for connection to the buildings which would require these services. It was furthermore strongly advised that basements be installed under all appropriate buildings within the museum complex. Basements serve a very useful function in terms of areas for museum personnel, workshops and storage rooms. MOTION 6/75 Moved by R. Cooper, seconded by B. Davies that it be indicated to the Museum Board that the Technical Advisory Committee agrees in principle and recommends to the Board that the museum at the proposed location be set up on the concept of a time street.
