Establishment Rougemount Cooperative Homes Neighbourhood Watch

Recommendation:
That the letter from the Durham Regional Police Service dated December 7,
2004 endorsing the establishment of the Rougemount Cooperative Homes
Neighbourhood Watch be received.
That the Council of the Corporation of the City of Pickering hereby endorses the
Rougemount Cooperative Homes Neighbourhood Watch and approves the
installation of Neighbourhood Watch signs at the entrances to the subject area.
That the appropriate staff of the City of Pickering be given authority to give effect
thereto.
Executive Summary:
To endorse the establishment of the Rougemount Cooperative Homes Neighbourhood
Watch and direct staff to erect the Neighbourhood Watch signs at the entrances to the
subject area by approving the installation of the signs.
Financial Implications: Not applicable
Background:
Please find attached to this Report a letter from the Durham Regional Police Service
dated December 7, 2004 advising of their endorsement of the Rougemount Cooperative
Homes Neighbourhood Watch, which is located at 400 Kingston Road.

By endorsing this Neighbourhood Watch, Council is giving permission to the installation
of signs to be placed at the entrances to the subject area. The Neighbourhood Watch
will purchase the signs, however, City staff will undertake the installation of two signs.

RE: THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A COMMUNITY NEIGHBOURHOOD WA TCH
"Rougemount Co-operative Homes - 400 Kingston Road~ Pickering"
Through the implementation of Crime Prevention Programs, dedicated community volunteers work with police to
help reduce crime in their communities.
One such "Citizen Involved" Crime Prevention Program is Neighbourhood Watch. It is a program which employs
an elegantly simple technique of"neighbours looking out for neighbours" to reduce threats of crime against
potential victims.
This letter is to introduce you to a group of concerned citizens who want to get involved in such a program. Through
persistence, devotion and hard work, these people have made an honourable effort to form a Neighbourhood Watch
within their community. They have met all criteria as set out in the Durham Regional Police Service
"Neighbourhood Watch Guidelines" and have received a commitment from their fellow neighbours of at least 75%
participation. In so doing, they have demonstrated their understanding that Crime Prevention is not just a job for a
few professionals. Rather, the attitude and involvement of these citizens proves their genuine concern to work
together to make our community a better place to live.
The Durham Regional Police Service endorses this new organization as an official Community Neighbourhood
Watch. It is recommended that they be granted permission to erect approved Neighbourhood Watch signs in their
area as a crime deterrent.
