A By-law of the Corporation of the
Town of Pickering for the regulation
of traffic under the jurisdiction of
the Town of Pickering.
The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Pickering ENACTS
AS FOLLOWS:
PART 1 - DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this by-law:-
(a) Commercial Motor Vehicle means a motor vehicle having permanently
attached thereto a truck or delivery body and includes an
ambulance, hearse, casket wagon, fire apparatus, police patrol,
motor bus and tractor, used for hauling purposes on the highulp -
(b) Corner means the point of intersection of curbs or edges of the
portion of the highway used for vehicular traffic.
(c) Crosswalk means that portion of a zuadway ordinarily included
wit-'?7J,n tTie prolongation or connection of the lateral lines of
sidewalks or any portion of a roadway distinctly indicated For
pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings.
j Gross weight means the combined weight of vehicle and load.
(a) Highway - See Street or highway.
i) Intersection means the area embraced within the prolongation or
connect1on f_ the lateral curb lines or, if none, then of the
1-"--era', boundary lines of two or more roadways which join one
another at an angle, whether or not one croEses the other.
(g, Park or Parkin when prohibited, means the standing of a vehicle,
-- w etxer occupied or not, except when standing temporarily for the
purpose of and while actually engarnd in loading or unloading
merchandise or passengers.
(h) Pedestrian means a person afoot and invalids and children in
wiee'red -carriages.
(i) Roadway means the part of the highway that is improved, des;3n
Sidewalk means that portion of a street between the curb lines or
the ateral lines of a roadway and the adjacent property lines
intenc'?d for the use of pedestrians.

(1) Stop when required, means a complete cessation of movement.

(m) Stop or Stopping, when prohibited, means the halting of a vehicle
even momentarily, whether occupied or not, except when necessary
to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the
directions of a constable or other police officer or of a traffic
control sign or signal.
(n) Street or Hi hwa includes a common and public highway, street,
avenue, par way, driveway, square, place, bridge, viaduct or
trestle, designed and intended for, or used.by, the general public
for the passage of vehicles.
fo) Traffic includes pedestrians, ridden or herded animals, vehicles
ann otFier conveyances either singly or together while using any
street for purposes of travel.
(p) Traffic Control Device means any sign; or roadway, curb or sidewalk
marking; or other oevire erected or placed under the authority of
the Council for the purpose of guiding or directing traffic.
(q) Tr?afficSi nasal means any device manually, electrically or
m.c a- n- h cally operated for the regulation of traffic.
fr! Vehicle includes a motor vehicle, trailex, traction engine, fare
Er-a'6-tor, road--building machine and any vehicle drawn, propellee
or driven by any kind of power, including muscular power.. Dvh
does not include a motorized snow vehicle or the cars any _
way running only upon rails.
',RT II - OBEDIENCE TO TRAEPIC REGULATIONS
1. Police to Enforce By-Law
The provisions of this by-law shall be enforced by the Durham
Regional Police Department.
III - 13A1lKING - (Method of Parking)
1. Parallel
No person shall. pa.'k a vrehicle on any street other than a one-way
street unless on the right--hand side of th,:? street, having regar-'
for the direction in which the vehicle had been proceeding and
unless the right-front: and .night-re<+r wheels or runners of the
vehicle are paralleJ- to and distant respect,i,rel;r not more than,
inches from the edge of the roadway, provided that this pro•-isigq
shall not apply where angle parking is specifically authorized by
by-law.
". Parking prohibited
(1) in Specified Places
No person shall park a vehicle in any of the following places
on a sidewalk.
In front of a public or private driveway.
Within an intersection.
i7ithi.n ter, i-et of a fire hydrant.

Within twenty f(-et of a crosswalk at an intersection.
On any bridge, or in any subway, or the approaches thereto.

On any Street in such a manner as to obstruct traffic.
In such a position as will prevent the ac.nvenient removal of any
other vehicle previously pai.od or standing.
In front of the entrance to an hotel.
In front of the entrance to an office building.
In front of the entrance to any place where goods of merchandise are
regularly delivered or renoved.
In front of the entrance to a hospital. '
in front of the entrance to a theatre, auditorium or other building
while large assemblies are being held in such theatre, auditorium or
other building, or for a reasonable time immediately preceding and
following such assemblages.
On any roadway for a longer period than three hours between 12 o'clock
midnight and 7 o'clock a.m.
On the boulevard of any curbed street, between the curb and the adjacent
property line.
(2) In Specified Places Where Signs on Display
When properly worded signs have been erected and are on display, no
person shall park a vehicle in any of the following places:
i
Within fifty feet of any intersection on any through highway.
Within twenty-five feet of the lot on which a fire-hall is located
or within one hundred feet of such lot on the opposite side of said
street.
Within eighty feet of any point designated as a bus or coach stop.
When properly worded signs have been erected and are on display, no
person shall stop or park any vehicle other than a school bus in any
of the following places:
Between 8:15 a.m, and 4:30 p.m. on both sides of the street adjacent
to school property and within 200 feet of the school entrance.
(3) 'Bus and Taxicab Stands
(a) No person shall stand or park a motor bus or taxicab upon
any street in any business or residential district at any
place other than at a bus stop or taxicab stand respectively,
except that this provision shall not prevent the driver of
any such vehicle from temporarily stropping the vehicle in
accordance with other stopping or parking reaulati-
place for the purpose, of and while actually engaged in lo&41A;
or unloading passengers.
(b) No person shall stop, stand or park a vehicle other than a
bus in a bus stop, or other than a taxicab in a taxicab
stand when any such stop or stand has been officially
designated and appropriately signed, except that the driver
of a passenger vehicle may temporarily stop therein for the
purpose of and while actually loading or unloading passengers
when such stopping does not interfere with any bus or taxicab
waiting to enter or about to enter suc' zone.

(4) Parking Restrictions on specified Streets
When properly worded signs have been erected and are on
display no person shall park a vehicle on any street,
streets or parts of streets listed in Schedule A of this
By-Law as set out in Column 1, on the side or sides of
the streets set out in column 2, during the period set out
in Column 3 of said schedule A.
(5) No person shall park or stand any vehicles on any highway
or portion thereof except as follows:
(a) Where there is a raised curb, on the right side on the
travelled portion of the highway having regard to the
direction, such vehicle was proceeding with its front
and rear wheels parallel to and not more than 12 inches
out from such curb. ,
(b) Where there is no curb or a rolled curb, with the right
front and rear wheels parallel to and as near to the
right hand limit of the highway as is practicable with-
out stopping or parking over a sidewalk or footpath or
over any part of the highway where grass is grown or
which is not intended for the use of vehicles.
1. Entering Highway
The driver of a vehicle emerging from a driveway, lane, lot or
building shall stop the vehicle immediately prior to driving
onto the sidewalk and shall not enter the roadway until he can
do so in safety.
2. Funeral and Other Processions
(a) No person shall intersect a funeral or other properly
authorized procession while it is in motion except under
the direction of a police officer.
(b) The driver of a vehicle in a funeral or other procession
shall drive as near to,the right-hand edge of the road-
way as practicable and follow the vehicle ahead as close
as is practicable and safe.
PART V-PENALTIES
1. Any person violating any of the provisions of this by-law shall be
subject to a penalty of not more than Ten Dollars ($10.00) for the
first offence and not more than Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00) for
every subsequent offence, exclusive of costs, and all such
penalties shall be recoverable under the Ontario Summary
Convictions Act.
ART VI
ONTARIO HIGHWAY TRAFFIC ACT TO GOVERN
The provisions of this By-law shall be subject to the provisions
of the Highway Traffic Act and amendmente thereto.
