David called the meeting to order and read the LandAcknowledgement. 2. Review and Approval of Agenda Moved by V. Shaw Seconded by O. Approval of Minutes Moved by O. Grignon Seconded by V. Carried 5. Presentations Allison Hector-Alexander, Region of Durham Patricia Hines, Region of Durham Nilo Honarbakhsh, Region of Durham Re: Durham Region Together Against Hate A.Hector-Alexander spoke to Durham Region’s CommunitySafety and Well-Being Plan and highlighted the communityinitiatives supported through the Micro-Grant Pilot Program. Discussion ensured amongst the Taskforce regarding the accessible nature of micro-grants and the positive impact demonstrated by the program. P. Hines and N. Honarbakhsh spoke to Durham Region’s Together Against Hate initiative to increase public awareness of public policy issues related to race relations, anti-racism, oranti-hate in the community. Discussion ensured amongst the Taskforce regarding: •how various communities will be engaged and what platforms and media formats may be utilized for publicawareness; and, •the coalition and steering committee expected to beformed for the initiative and how often it is expected that they would meet. 6. General Business 6.1 City Updates: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion D.Machado-Yew Woon provided an update regarding: •City Council’s approval of the Taskforce’s 2024 YearEnd Report and 2025 Work Plan; •the Durham Pride Parade event happening on Saturday June 7 and information regarding the Pickering marching group; and, Page 3 of 5 Item/ Ref # Details & Discussion & Conclusion (summary of discussion) Action Items/Status (include deadline as appropriate) •the Emancipation Day Event happening on June 30, 2025 at the Esplanade Park from 4:00 pm -7:00 pm. 6.2 Together Against Hate (Durham Region) D. David solicited the Committee for thoughts regardingDurham Region’s Together Against Hate initiative. Discussion ensued amongst the Taskforce regarding: •clarification regarding the need for engagement onthe steering committee/coalition building aspect of theproject; •whether a financial commitment is anticipated beingas part of this initiative; •concerns regarding the time commitment involved;and, •the form/questionnaire to complete to get involved inthe project and sharing feedback regarding frequencyof meeting times. Moved by O. Gringon Seconded by K. Hanson That the Pickering Anti-Black Racism Taskforce support the Durham Region Together Against Hate Initiative as Coalition Partner. Carried 6.4 Subcommittee and Event Updates D. David provided an update to the Taskforce regarding the Emancipation Day Event held by the Region ofDurham. D. David spoke to: •the event will be held on June 30, 2025 in Esplanade Park in Pickering; •the event theme “Rooted in Resilience – EmbracingEmpowerment”; and, •the Taskforce potentially hosting a table and contributing financially to the event. D. David further spoke to the Taskforce’s anticipatedinvolvement in other events and initiatives including the Page 4 of 5 Item/ Ref # Details & Discussion & Conclusion (summary of discussion) Action Items/Status (include deadline as appropriate) Durham Region Together Against Hate initiative and the Black Joy Holiday Market. Discussed ensued amongst the Taskforce regarding: •clarification regarding the Taskforce’s contribution tothe Emancipation Day Event last being just under$1,000.00 for a water station; and, •whether the Taskforce could utilize Marketing andPromotion funds for some water bottles. Moved by O. Grignon Seconded by K. Hanson That the Pickering Anti-Black Racism Taskforce allocate up to $1,000.00 toward the Durham Region Emancipation Day Event from the Community Events segment. Carried International Day for People of African Descent Event D. David provided an update regarding the InternationalDay for People of African Descent Event including: •the potential dates available to host the event; •whether an evening time could be considered; and, •concerns regarding the time commitment of Taskforce Members during the summer months; •whether line dancing or games could beincorporated into the event; •clarification regarding the budget allocation of$5,000.00 for this event in the year past; •the need for Taskforce Members to help facilitate the event; •past partnership with Durham Family CulturalCentre (DFCC) on this event in the past; and, •clarification that the approved event is not restricted to being a community BBQ. Grignon 1.That the Pickering Anti-Black Racism Taskforcehold an International Day for People of AfricanDescent Event (date to be determined); and, 2.That $5,000.00 be allocated toward the event fromthe Community Events and Marketing & Promotions segments. Carried Consultation and Co-Design: Anti-Black Racism Strategy RFP process K. Hanson and D. Machado Yew-Woon provided anupdate to the Taskforce regarding the Consultation andCo-Design: Anti-Black Racism Strategy RFP processhighlighting the evaluation committee set up for the RFPand the criteria being created for the evaluation process. 6.3 Executive Updates (Budget) There was no update provided. 6.5 PABRT Work Plan Update D. David indicated that D. Machado Yew-Woon hadalready provided this update under Item 6.1 7. Correspondence There was no correspondence. 8. Other Business 9.
