This item was discussed at a subsequent Durham Recreation Directors' meeting, culminating with the fortnation of an Ad Hoc Games Committee to investigate the feasibility of en application for the year 2000. The Onterio Games ataried in 1970 as a showcase for emateur eport. As a multi-sport competitioq the Ontazio Games provide the provincc's athletes with a developmental snd competitive opportunity to prepare them for netional and intemational compctitions. They also give the public a chence to see Onterio's best emateur ethletes compcte provincielly. Each Onterio Games involvcs from 2,200 to 3,000 perticipants from across the provincc competing in up to 26 sporta. ;.s. The Ad Hoc Games Committee curcenAy has representation hom the Town of Pickering, The Town of Ajex, Township of Brock, Municipaliry of Clerington, City of Oshawa, Township of Uxbridge, Taum of Whitby, YMCA of Durhem Region, Regional Municipality of Durham and Ministry of Citizenship, Culture and Recroation. ARer a thorough review, it is the opinion of the Ad Hoc Games Committee that the hosting of the Ontario Summer Games would be a viable project, oniy on the basis of a full commitment &om all communities, This project would strengthen sports development in the region, promote its benefits, build closer municipal partnerships in the delivery of leisure services along wilh providing a vehicle for positive economic impact, community development, recognition and civic pride. The Ad Hoc Games Committee is presently seeking Town Council's endorsement to continue the process. This request is being sent to ull Municipal Councils represented on the Ad Hoc Games Committee for consideration. It is our intention, nfter finalizing our research, that a full report to the Municipal Councils would be made prior to any expenditures or the fortnulation of a formal bid. Presently, we are only seeking Town Council support for staff commitment to sit on the Ad Hoc Games Committee.
