HomeMy WebLinkAboutJune 25, 1992 MINUTES A meeting of the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee was held on Thursday, June 25th, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. at the Altona Mennonite Church & Cemetery and at Celia Bronkhorst's home. PRESENT: Celia Bronkhorst Kim Thompson Anna Willson Konrad Zeh Frank Williamson Henry Gawman Enrico Pistritto arrived at 9:30 p.m. ALSO PRESENT: Gail Sussman, Ministry of Culture & Communications John Ota, Ministry of Culture & Communications Mr. J. Nighswander, Trustee Board Chairperson Kathy Nighswander, Trustee Lynda Williams, Trustee STAFF: Debbie Kearns, Councillors' Secretary 1. Altona Mennonite Church & Cemetery Gail Sussman and John Ota from the Ministry met with LACAC and trustees of the Altona Church to review progress to date and clarify future directions. The meeting took place at the cemetery, in order that Gail might point out specifically what the Ministry feels are priorities at this time, using actual stones as examples. Gail discussed various problems typical to a older cemetery such as acid, salt, alignment, ponding, etc. For details on remedies she referred to a kit that was made available at the LACAC Conference in Peterborough in June. Cont'd. . . . 1 ti - 2 - Gail identified certain situations as priorities, stones in ground, stones out of plumb, and problem stones. She suggested a sub-committee be formed consisting of several LACAC members and trustees to formulate an action plan. The group discussed ideas for fundraising including offering walking tours, rubbings, and rental of the church for weddings. Gail commended those who had done work on the cemetery for their dedication and openness to learning new effective methods for restoration. 2. Hugh Miller Application The committee felt the need for a more detailed breakdown of the estimate submitted to Mr. Miller by Mr. Devitt in order to assure that certain specifications be met. • Kim will visit the property to confirm what work needs to be done. 3. Red Cross Church Mr. Koziol, of Totten, Sims, Hubicki contacted Anna to inquire whether LACAC had any interest in the Red Cross Church which must be moved or demolished. The Committee suggested that a letter be sent to Mr. Koziol suggesting that he could either pursue a buyer by offering the building for sale for a dollar, or sell it for recycled brick. 2. Other Business a) William Zeyl of Marshall, Macklin, Monaghan contacted Anna regarding the Class Environmental Assessment of the Finch Ave. corridor the firm is conducting for the Region. He requested the assistance of LACAC in providing information of heritage sites and other features of significance, and, in particular, that a LACAC member accompany him on a survey of the area. Frank volunteered to go, and Konrad will attend if possible. Cont'd. . . . • L ' - 3 - b) c) d) The committee discussed the resolution coming before council regarding the designation of Whitevale. A letter will be sent to Noel Marshall requesting that LACAC be advised of relevant issues coming forward at Council. The committee will support exclusions studied on a property-by-property basis. It was requested that a proposal be made to Council to direct Tim Sheffield to contact the O.M.B. to postpone the hearing so that LACAC can arrange a meeting with the consultants and the residents requesting exemption. Bruce Taylor will be asked to prepare a resolution that money be transferred from the Consultants account to the Conventions account. Debbie will contact Bruce Taylor regarding any possible storage area for LACAC material which would be accessible to members. e) New LACAC members will receive the orientation package.
