A meeting of the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee
was held on Wednesday, September 2, 1992 at 7:30 p.m. in Meeting Room
#1, Pickering Civic Complex.

1. Adoption of Minutes
Moved by Frank Williamson, seconded by Henry Gawman that the
Minutes of the Meeting of July 29th, 1992 be adopted.
CARRIED
2. Finch Avenue Class Environmental Assessment
Frank Williamson read a letter of thanks to the Committee which he
received from Mr. Zehl of Marshall, Macklin, Monaghan along with
pictures of homes which appear to be of significant architectural
and/or heritage value.
The Secretary was authorized to send a letter to Mr. Zehl thanking
him for the photographs as well as asking for co-operation with
respect to preserving these buildings and also keeping the
Committee informed of any plans for this area.

3. Hug} Miller Application
Kim' Thompson informed the Committee of the progress of the Miller
application.
Mr. Marshall will write a letter to the Ministry advising that the
Town will guarantee the funds requested by Mr. Miller.
4. Heritage Pickering's Comments to Unterman. McPhail
Re: Proposed Landfill Sites
Frank Williamson informed the Committee of the report which was
sent to Unterman, McPhail Heritage Advisory Resource Consultants
along with photographs taken by Janet Mehak of a number of
• possible heritage homes in the vicinity of the landfill sites.
This report reflects the Committee's concern for the preservation
and conservation of the rich architectural heritage within the
Town of Pickering.
5. Federal Lands
Anna Willson discussed the announcement by the Federal Government
to release 2,064 hectares of surplus lands around the area where
the Pickering Airport was to be built some years ago.
The Secretary was directed to write a letter to Mr. Marshall, Town
Manager asking that the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory
Committee be included in the talks with the Federal Government,
the Provincial Government and the Municipality concerning these
lands.
The Secretary was also directed to write a letter to Margaret
Kraan of Public Works Canada concerning the study which has now
been completed and request an update regarding this matter. A
copy of this letter will be sent to Rene Soetens.
6. Altona Mennonite Church and Cemetery
Celia Bronkhorst gave a report concerning the cemetery
restoration. Trustees now to make a decision as to what they
intend to do regarding the raising and framing of certain stones.

7. Whitevale Mail. Kiosk
Anna Willson gave a report concerning the Whitevale Mail Kiosk.
The Committee discussed the package of information submitted by
Canada Post. It was decided that the lighting proposed is not
appropriate.
A motion was made by Enrico Pistritto and seconded by Kim Thompson
to hear the views of Mr. John Hayes of Whitevale concerning
appropriate lighting for Kiosk.
The Committee approved the plans submitted with the exception of
the lighting and recommended the use of either 1) incandescent
lighting or 2) Mercury Halide.
The Secretary will send a response, to Planning concerning LACAC's
recommendation. 1 •
8. Whitevale Heritage Designation
Anna Willson, a member of the Citizen's Committee in Whitevale,
gave a report concerning the progress of the Committee.
The Committee is studying the Hamlet of Whitevale Heritage
Conservation District Plan and making some changes. They will
make a presentation to LACAC when they have completed their study.
9. Other Business
a) Information was received from the Ministry of Culture and
Communications concerning a Technical Training Workshop on
Maintenance being offered. 1
Janet Mehak will attend the December 4th Workshop in
Vaughan, Kim Thompson, Celia Bronkhorst, Anna Willson and
David Pickles will attend the December 5th Workshop in
Vaughan.
b) Kim Thompson gave a report concerning Woodruff's Tavern
which is located on Highway #2 across from Southview Drive.
Kim will reply to the Planning Department reaffirming
LACAC's position on the conservation of this building.

c) Frank Williamson reported on his progress in preparing a
pamphlet advertising LACAC.
Kim Thompson mentioned that she has, a large file of
information that may assist Frank in this endeavour.
Frank to pursue further.
5) - Next Meeting
The next meeting shall be held on Wednesday, September 16, 1992 at
7:30 p.m. in the Committee Room.
