PRESENT: Karen Emmink John Sabean Isa James • Susan Shewan Patricia Arnold V • Staff: Debbie Kearns 1. Adoption of Minutes Moved by Isa James, seconded by Karen Emmink that the Minutes of the September 9th and 23rd, 1 9.98 meetings be adopted as amended. CARRIED 2.. Walking/Driving Brochures & Inventory John distributed copies of the Greenwood Walking Tour and the Whitevale Walking.Tour brochures which were prepared by Catherine Tredway, BarnOwl Designs. Susan suggested that a glossary be included on the brochure explaining various terms. John also suggested that a map and a drawing of each property should be included. • John suggested that the Pickering Historical Society and Heritage Pickering jointly prepare a walking tour brochure., the Committee concurred with this proposal. John stated that this • brochure should be prepared by the Spring of 1999, that the Committee walk the tour and then lead a couple of tours. . John advised that a letter was sent to Catherine Tredway requesting the brochures and inventory be completed by specific dates. He further advised that another letter would be sent' with final dates outlined. • - 2 - 3. Property Designation Karen, Isa and John advised of the tours they took with Councillor Pickles of the Woodruff Houses, the Cleeve Horne property, Tom Thomson property and Fred Beers' property. John advised that he has been in contact with Unterman-McPhail who advised that they will prepare a report on the Palmer-Voss House. John reported that he would like the Palmer-Voss House, Woodruff-MacKenzie House, Ann Dinardo Home, Cleeve Horne Home and eventually the Village of Dunbarton designated. He further advised that the residents of the Tom Thomson home do not want to proceed with designation. Training Session has not yet been set up. 4. Niagara-on-the-Lake CD ROM Has been ordered. 5. Heritage Pickering Brochure John distributed copies of the brochure which were prepared by Peter Buerschaper. Moved by Isa James, seconded by Susan Shewan that a color cartridge be purchased, out of Heritage Pickering's budget, to be used for the preparation, by Peter Buerschaper, of the Heritage Pickering Brochure. CARRIED 6. Response Re: Airport Lands No response has been made at this time. Isa suggested that a letter be forwarded commenting on matters within the mandate of the Committee. 7. Response to Gravelle Letter John commented on the letter received from Michael Gravelle, M.P.P. concerning "Culture Matters". He suggested that a letter be forwarded to Mr. Gravelle and The Honourable Isabel Bassett, Minister, Ministry of Citizenship, Culture & Recreation addressing issues of concern to the Committee. 8. Letter from Aaron Fremont A response will be forwarded to Mr. Fremont concerning a Heritage Community within the Town of Pickering, advising that this matter will be further discussed by the Committee and also discussed with Council. - 3 - 9. Heritage Pickering Files John distributed copies of the list of Heritage Pickering Inventory and requested that a copy be kept on file. He also suggested that three copies be made of every report in order that one may be kept in the library, one kept in the files and one kept by himself to ensure that at least two copies are always available. 10. Mapping John requested a copy of a Town map outlining the Ward boundaries and one showing the entire Town of Pickering including the rural area. 11. Land Registry Office Documents/APOLROD Nothing to report at this time. 12. Liaison Pickering Township Historical Society-Newsletter distributed. Durham Heritage Fest - October 24th, 1998 13. Other Business a) Rouge Park Heritage Bus Tour - Sunday, October 18, 1998. b) John advised that a resident of Woodview Avenue called to advise of a neighbouring Cobblestone home that may be worthy of designation. John inspected but advised that he wasn't sure what to do. This issue will be raised at the next meeting. c) Birrell painting not available. d) Isa suggested that more inventory be purchased for the Committee to include reading material and more copies of`The Pickering Story'. Isa also suggested that a list be kept of the books on file and a sign out sheet for those borrowed. 14. Next Meeting The next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 11th, 7:30 p.m. in the Tower Room. 15. Adjournment The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 p.m.
