Welcome & Introductions Steve welcomed those in attendance and introductions were made by all present. 2. Pickering Museum Village Overview & Advisory Committee Role Steve provided a history of the Museum:  proud to celebrate the early settlers of the Township of Pickering  14 buildings on site  reopened in 1979  buildings were brought on site about 25 years ago  funded by the City of Pickering Dave advised of the educational programs offered:  programs are offered to all grade levels Page 2 Item / Ref # Details & Discussion & Conclusion (summary of discussion) Action Items / Status (include deadline as appropriate)  12,000 to 13,000 students visit the museum every year  2,000 to 3,000 students are involved with in school programs as well  programs also available for drop-in and half-day camps  courses are also offered  outreach programs  Heritage Fair for schools  Heritage Day  weddings – 12 to 15 per year  group camping – Girl Guides, Brownies, Scouts, etc.  filming  research  preparation of displays and exhibits Katrina outlined the various volunteer groups, emphasizing the need for and great work of the volunteers:  Bloomers & Britches team – established in 1999  Gas & Steam Barn team  Foundation team – fund raising  Backwoods Players – established in 2001  Pickering Museum Village Committee team  120 active volunteers working throughout the village  must attend fire training and orientation every two years  must attend one workshop each summer  interpretative techniques every two years  must attend one special event each year  a volunteer dinner is held each year Joe informed the committee of the clean-up and retooling of equipment at the Steam Barn. He suggested that the museum consider investigating the purchase of model steam engines that are fairly inexpensive and easy to operate. This way, the gas and steam barn can be open to public for more then two events per year. 3. Election of Advisory Committee Chair Moved by Bill Utton Seconded by Charles Stinson That Laura Drake sit as Chair of the Pickering Museum Village Advisory Committee for a period to expire on November 30th, 2006. Foundation Report Laura advised, on behalf of Pat Dunnill that the Pickering Museum Village Foundation has approximately $190,000 in the bank. Linda O’Brien has been running the bingos and making the deposits in Pat’s absence. Laura further advised that membership to the Foundation costs $25.00. 5. Pickering Museum Village Budget Steve advised that a preliminary budget review was undertaken in October and has been submitted. Restoration of the hotel and construction of the new program operations centre is the big capital project item included in this year’s budget. Projects from last year:  drainage work – completed in December – on pathway from administration building down to site  sign – from 2002 funds – carried over  MTO requirements must be met  Municipal Property & Engineering are involved in the design and accumulation of supplies  Program Operations Centre - an architect will be hired to do the 1st phase of the design drawings at a approximate cost of $12,500 – this amount was carried over to the 2004 budget Councillor McLean brought a motion forward and Council approved the request to the Federal Government to donate and relocate the Winger House to the Museum site. 6. Special Events a) Laura advised of the event taking place on June 13th at the museum site, partnering for the second year with the Race Relations Committee, called “Canadian Tapestry - Weaving the World Together”. A suggestion will be made that each group/organization carry a flag of their country. Laura advised that tents are required and Charles offered to approach various businesses concerning loaning tents for this event. The museum will have a table at this event. c) Backwoods Players are performing ”The Patchwork Quilt” at the Brougham Hall on Friday, February 13th and Saturday, February 14th, tickets are $15.00 per person. 7. New Business a) Laura advised that a nomination has been submitted for Mary Cook to receive a volunteer award at the Civic Awards. b) Laura advised that “Sisters In The Wilderness” will be aired on February 23rd on CBC and that a fair bit of filming was done at the Museum. c) Laura advised that Heritage Pickering is, once again, up and running. d) Bill Utton advised that Black Creek have a partnering initiative and recommended that this committee should become involved for further exposure and another avenue for advertising. Marisa advised that the City has a promotional team that coordinates advertising on the web, community page, etc. She further stated that dollars are committed for promotion of the museum. e) Laura suggested that Bill Utton continue as Vice-Chair and represent the Committee on March 2nd at the Museum Volunteer Event at Petticoat Creek Library and Community Centre at 6:30 pm. 8.
