Ekenkwo A. Jacobs C. Reidt M. Odle C. Harper T. Ryce, Staff Representative D. Marlowe, Staff Representative D. Shields, City Clerk Absent: K. Mark Item/ Details & Discussion & Conclusion Action Items/Status Ref# (summary of discussion) (include deadline as appropriate) 1. Welcome & Introductions D. Shields D. Shields welcomed everyone and noted that the first item for the evening would be the mandatory Accessibility Training. She noted that once the training was completed the Diversity Committee would begin their regular meeting. 2. Accessibility Training D. Marlowe Before the training started the participants introduce themselves and welcomed the new Diversity Committee members. D. Marlowe provided training on the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act as mandated by the province. 3. Committee Mandate and Terms of Reference T. Ryce T. Ryce did an overview of the Committee's Mandate and T. Ryce/D. Marlowe to Terms of Reference. There were no noted concerns or contact Police Rep for changes requested. Diversity Committee for information. C. Ryce T. Ryce updated the Committee on the In Your Words and Expressions Contest for 2014. She noted that the Committee needed to decide on the subject for the children to write their essays on. The Committee agreed that they would like the message to be written in the positive and also noted that experiences with bullying would be a good addition to the topic since it is very prevalent in the school systems. The Committee decided that the essay would be titled. "I live in a diverse community and my life is better because." 5. Diversity Survey All The Committee gave a brief history of the survey project to the T. Ryce noted that she was ready to send out the letters for the good will and hope, multi faith holidays Christmas tree. She noted that this year the tree would be covered in snowflakes and each multi faith organization could put their own message into the snowflake and it would be hung on the tree. C. Reidt noted that she would like to see the opportunity for anyone to leave a message on a snowflake for the tree. T. Ryce noted that she would look into providing that opportunity for families. Ryce confirmed with the Committee that the Heritage Day event at the Pickering Town Centre was an event for 2014 and again would be held in February. Odle That the minutes of the June13, 2013 meeting be approved. Carried 6.
