HomeMy WebLinkAboutJanuary 9, 2002Ci o Pickering Advisory Committee On Race Relations & Equity ` Minutes PICKEWN Wednesday, January 9, 2002 7:10 p.m. Chair: Prem Noronha - Waldriff Present: Prem Noronha - Waldriff, City of Pickering Matthew Carmichael, Community Appointee Kisho Umar, Community Appointee Jessie Docherty, South Pickering Seniors Club #753 Lewis Williams, Durham District School Board Robert Cutting, Durham District Catholic School Board Manraj Pannu, Dunbarton High School Debbie Kearns, City of Pickering Regrets: Councillor Ryan Luigia Ayotte, Durham District School Board Ian Weber, Community Appointee 1. Welcome and Introductions Prem welcomed all present and forwarded Councillor Ryan's regrets in not attending the meeting due to a family illness. 2. Adoption of Notes The notes of the November 14th and December 11 th meetings were approved as presented. 3. Heritage Week Event Prem advised that Councillor Ryan has requested the Committees participation in Heritage Week at the Pickering Town Centre on February 22 and 23, 2002. Prem further advised that she has confirmed with the Pickering Town Centre the dates and involvement of the Race Relations and Equity Committee at this event. Letters will be forwarded to all community groups inviting their participation. Robert and Lewis confirmed that a table will be set up by their respective Boards. 4. Doris Beers Prem advised that she had been speaking with Doris Beers who stated that a meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 16 to discuss the program entitled `Turn To Respect'. Once this meeting has been held, Doris will contact Prem with an update which will be provided to the Committee at their next meeting scheduled for February 13th, 2002. 5. Other Business a) Lewis advised that the Multi- Cultural Council of Oshawa/Durham will be holding an event sometime in February /March. This event will target youth within Durham on Friday evening and youth and parents on Saturday. It will provide an opportunity for youth to connect with police and school board representatives, as well as share concerns and network with each other. b) Lewis further advised that an event is scheduled with the participation of 60 students from Grades 4, 5 and 6 who will be involved in writing plays in French on anti - racism and taking these plays back to their schools. 6. Next Meeting Pickering Advisory Committee On Race Relations & Equity Minutes Wednesday, January 9, 2002 7:10 p.m. Chair: Prem Noronha - Waldriff The next meeting will be held on February,13, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Committee Room. 7. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
