HomeMy WebLinkAboutNovember 12, 1998MINUTES A meeting of the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations and Equity was held in the Pickering Civic Complex on Thursday, November 12, 1998 at 7:00 p.m. Present: Councillor David Ryan Jill Foster, Pickering Library Board Mobeen Khaja, Muslim Educational Cultural Association Jane Kiyonaga, Durham Catholic District School Board Ian Weber, Community Appointee Philip Matsushita, Pine Ridge Secondary School Gary Ranalli, Pine Ridge Secondary School Tanya Gulliver, Social Development Council of Ajax - Pickering Pritty Patel, Pine Ridge Secondary School Shaun Cameron, Pine Ridge Secondary School Emily Nakada, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Krystle Holley,,St. Mary Catholic Secondary School Monika Jensen, Community Appointee Paul Chiang, Durham Regional Police Services Manraj Pannu, Dunbarton High School Reshma Ramjattan, Dunbarton High School Steve Reynolds, Director of Culture & Recreation Valerie Jones, Employment Services Co- ordinator Debbie Kearns, Committee Co- ordinator 1. Welcome and Introductions Councillor Ryan welcomed all in attendance and introductions were made. 2. StrateEic Plan A preliminary meeting was held with Jill Foster, Steve Reynolds, Gary Ranalli and Dave Ryan in attendance. The Strategic Plan will begin with the Mandate and Terms of Reference. Gary Ranalli will create a template for the Committee to be prepared for the next meeting. Gary advised that the template will be a starting point, that full participation, by the Committee will be necessary, and that the template will provide a framework and will be based on the Town Policy. It will identify areas of focus and perhaps the beginning of a Mission Statement. Jill advised that the Committee will then have the objectives and the direction of how to reach those objectives outlined. -2- The Strategic Plan will be blocked into the next series of meetings. 3. Forum Phil Matsushita recommended that, if the forum is to be held, a date needs to be set immediately and a sub - committee should be organized to consider various individuals to be the special speaker at the event. Steve Reynolds advised that at the last meeting a number of individuals stated their wish that the forum be held. It was decided that the forum will be held in May on the first or second Wednesday or Thursday. The sub - committee was formed to include Phil, Tanya, Shaun, Pritty, Reeshma, Emily or Krystle, Dunbarton rep. Town rep. and Aisha. This committee will also deal will outreach, attempting to get more community involvement. The flyer outlining responses from students concerning "What is Equity to Us" was discussed. Phil advised that these flyers were distributed at Pine Ridge. Each school represented had a number of responses with them and shared some of the comments. Phil stated that the space available will dictate how many students can be included. Tanya advised that the space depends on how much advertising. The more advertising, the more space. She also advised that the flyer will be inserted in the December 6th or 8th issue. Phil suggested that ethnic restaurants could be approached about advertising. Phil advised that at the meeting of the three schools it was felt that 25 responses from each school would be sufficient. A discussion concerning the size of response for insert took place. It was concluded that the responses should be varied, some one liners, some paragraphs, schools should be mixed together not set in groups. The persons name, school and age will be included on the flyer. 4. Other Business a) Tanya advised that an Advisory Team Meeting of the Critical Path Committee, Social Development Council will be held on Monday, November 16th. -3- b) Tanya advised that, on behalf of the Social Development Council, she will be applying for a Youth Services Grant. Ten youth would work for six months. She requested that letters of support be forwarded by the Committee Members. c) Mobeen Khaja advised that a hospital fund raising dinner has been organized for November 21 st, to be held at the Don Beer Arena, $15 per ticket. Dave advised that a table, which sits 10, has been purchased on behalf of the Race Relations & Equity Committee. d) Gary reminded everyone of the 50th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights event on December 10th. He advised that this event is now by invitation only. e) The Committee were reminded of the January 10th brunch at the Mandarin Restaurant. 5. Next Meeting January 13th, 1999, 6:30 p.m., in the Civic Complex, Committee Room. The meeting adjourned at 5:10 p.m.
