Redit welcomed everyone to the meeting and introductions were made around the table for the benefit of the guest in attendance. 2.0 Approval of Minutes Approval of agenda Moved by C. Harper Seconded by Councillor Ashe Carried Moved by C. Harper Seconded by D. Garland That the minutes of the September 13, 2012 meeting of the Diversity Committee be approved. Carried 3.0 Business Arising from Minutes Page 2 CORP0228—2/02 3.1) Survey J. Morris provided an update with respect to the Survey. She noted the City Solicitor had indicated he would provide his comments by Monday. 3.2) Spiritual and Religious Care Awareness Proclamation Request J. Morris provided an update with respect to following up on the request for a proclamation received from the Ontario Multifaith Council. She noted she had contacted the Ontario Human Rights Commission to request further clarification on this proclamation, as well as other municipalities to inquire whether or not they had proclaimed this week. Discussion ensued with respect to the proclamation request. Due to the lack of a quorum, no decisions or recommendations could be made. It was decided that due to the time frame involved, this be returned to the Mayor’s office for a decision. It was suggested further background information be obtained for future discussion and consideration of this request. It was suggested this be placed on the June, 2013 agenda for discussion next year, due to the time frames involved. 3.2) In Your Works Creative Arts Contest J. Morris noted that all books and posters had gone out to the schools. She noted the lack of participation from the teachers this year was a bit discouraging, but felt hopeful that this would not impact the number of entries. C. Harper questioned whether there were additional posters she could forward to schools as well as for the library. J. Morris to provide additional posters. J. Morris noted the same judges would be contacted, and it was suggested that MP Corneliu Chisu be contacted as well. J. Morris to action J. Morris to action J. Morris to action 4.0 New Business 4.1) Forum J. Morris noted the need to choose a guest speaker for this event which will take place on March 20th. C. Reidt noted she would like to see a focus on young people. She requested that members give this some thought for the All Page 3 CORP0228—2/02 next meeting. 4.2) Heritage Day J. Morris noted this will be taking place on February 23rd,, 2013. 5.0 Other Business 6.1) Councillor Ashe noted the Tamil Cultural & Academic Society of Durham will be hosting an event on October 20th. J. Morris noted she would forward an email for member awareness. Councillor Ashe noted that K. Mark and D. Panesar will be attending the Caribbean night dinner and dance as he is unable to attend. Discussion ensued with respect to such events being posted on the City’s website. It was suggested that invitations of this nature be forwarded to the membership for more awareness of community events. 6.2) D. Marlowe noted he had been in contact with the Human Rights Commission with respect to having a delegation out to a future meeting. He noted the Committee would need to decide on a topic, as they had requested we be specific. It was also suggested this could possibly be something that could be done in conjunction with the Accessibility Advisory Committee, such as an information night. He requested the members give this some thought, check out the Human Rights website and come back with some suggestions for a topic.
