Special Olympics 2008
Aisha inquired about the Special Olympics and if the Accessibility Committee would be participating in the events.
Prem indicated that the swimming portion would be taking place in the Recreation Complex pools, and will let the Committee know more about the City’s participation level once it has
been confirmed.
Civic Awards Nomination
Prem has submitted a Civic Awards Nomination for the Pickering Town Centre, Food Court. Accessibility was a big factor in the design aspect of the food court area and washrooms.
All Committee members were encouraged to keep the Civic Awards in mind throughout the year for nominations for the 2008 Awards.
Hopefully these awards will encourage businesses to think about accessibility issues when designing or re-designing their businesses/residences.
Accessibility Standards for Customer Service
Prem provided an update with regards to the new provincially mandated Accessibility Standards for Customer Services.
These standards will affect all public and private organizations with more than one employee and they have until 2010 to comply with all of the standards.
Copies will be provided to all members at the next meeting.
