Curb Cuts
All
Steve Forsey, Supervisor of Infrastructure Management to answer questions from the Committee.
Garry asked about a curb on Highview that needs to be shaved down. Steve told him that the curb is owned by the Region of Durham but if there are issues the City will contact the Region
and have it fixed.
Stephen asked about the standard profile for a curb and if curbs are meant to come even with the road.
Steve said that there are standards, however difficulties arise with roads with winter. Any new subdivision is built with the consideration of accessibility. Old curbs are still going
to be “full curbs” though, and attention is being given to fixing old ones as problems arise.
Stephen asked if there are regular inspections done on curbs. Steve said that yes, there are inspectors examining curbs and fixing deficiencies. The only problem that still exists with
this is funding. The City’s plan is to redo roads every 20 years, but this is not always fiscally possible.
Stephen mentioned a special tool that is used to flatten expansion joints when creating sidewalks. Would it be possible to obtain this tool to ensure that expansion joints are created
smoothly?
Steve said that he would look into this tool and report back to the Committee. He will also get some feedback from Clarington employees who are currently using this tool.
Prem to bring information about this tool from the Regional Accessibility Meeting to the next meeting.
Garry will contact Steve if/when he discovers any new sidewalk/curb issues.

Site Plan Review
All
S 11/05 – 875 Kingston Road
10 story mixed-use development (residences and commercial).
Councillor Littley believes that this development is in a good area and approves. She questioned where the underground parking was.
Comment sheet – it was noted that the Committee wishes to see the underground parking plans.
Total # of parking spaces = 406 spaces with 4 basement floors. Each floor will carry accessible spots.
Marisa questioned whether or not door widths and other internal standards are examined with these site plan reviews.
Stephen – we usually assume that the mandates/standards set by the provincial building code are followed.
Discussion ensued.
S 05/07 – Brock Road
Auto Fix– good number of parking and accessible spots. Some additional spots in the back.
Drop curb located in the front – might need to ensure that there are gradients in place in the front to ensure that it is not too steep for those in wheelchairs or with strollers.

2007 Workplan
All
Zoia showed the Committee the brochure that she has made, would like Councillor Littley to write a public service announcement and speak on a radio show or TV, and wants to approach
public sponsors to publicize what they offer for accessibility.
Suggests a monthly slot that advises the public about news from the Pickering AAC. Each month we might have a different sponsor or presentation. Regular media time – can tailor that
time to topical issues (i.e. winter-snow clearing).
Councillor Littley suggests that we partner with the Region on this as this should be a Durham wide initiative.
Prem to approach the Regional committee and ask them if they would be interested in being a part of this.
Everyone to bring an outline of topics that they would like to see.
Zoia asked that all members email their ideas and suggestions for the brochure.
Stephen – would like to add our contacts on the brochure so that people know who to contact.
Marisa suggests that Prem brings the brochure to the Graphics Artist to examine and provide comments on the mock-up of our brochure.
Marisa to give the Race Relations brochure to Prem to distribute to the Committee for inspiration.
Our possible mandate – “Open Minds, Opens Doors”.
Garry talked to Jim Thompson from the Region of Durham Transit. Suggested that once we get a brochure he would like to get his picture on the flyer, some business places are also willing
to put up a display and show an interest in the Committee.
Moved by Kelly Collins
Seconded by Stephen Little
That the draft brochure and business brochure be given to Prem to give to the City of Pickering, Graphic Artist to suggest general layout, size, and format. Also, Garry to take a few
pictures with his camera and email to the Committee
