HomeMy WebLinkAboutOctober 21, 1975 - 46 - 13/75 TOWN OF PICKERING MUSEUM BOARD A meeting of the Tov.7n or Pickering Museum Board was held on Tuesday, October 21st 1975 at 8:00 p.m. PRESENT: Mr. W. Biernacki Mr, Wm. Clark Mrs. B. Davies Mr. D. McLean Mr. R. Miller !Chairman) Councillor K. Spratley Mr. J.P. Myslik (Secretary) 1. ADOPTION OF MINUTES Moved by Councillor Spratley, seconded by D. McLean that the minutes of the meeting of September 16th 1975 be adopted. CARRIED Further to the minutes it was suggested that Miss Suzanne Clark and Mrs. Clark also Lillian Gauslin and Sylvia Rundle be contacted concerning the cataloguing of the items in the schoolhouse. $3.00 per hour was a suggested wage. Also pertaining to the mlnutes it was suggested that a letter of thanks be send to the Library Board pursuant to their participation ln History-in-Action. 2. CORRESPONDENCE a) í\ letter was received from Mrs. Joan Marr suggesting improvements to History-in-A8tion. It was suggested that a letter of thanks written in the name of the Chairman be sent to 'tv1rs. Joan Marr for her very helpful suggestions. b) A letter was received from Mr. William R. Coates, leader of the Claremont Citizens Band, expressing appreciation for the plaques presented to the band at History-in-Action. MO'I'ION #108/75_ Moved by D. McLean, seconded by WTI1. Clark that a letter of appreciation for the plaques for the Claremont band and for having them presented at History-in-Action be sent to the Newman family, CARRIED c) A letter was received from Valerie Proctor of the Canadian Museum Associa"tion, asklng for suggestiorB to be submitted to the nominations Committee. d) A letter was received from Mr. V.N. Styrmo of the Ministry of Culture and Recreation remitting a grant of $6,400.00 to the museum. e) A letter was received from the Manitoba Museum Man and Nature - asking for tape recordings. f) A letter was received from Mr. Tom Ward a professional cabinet maker who wants to set up shop ir: the museum, - 47 -. 13/75 2. CORRESPONDENCE (Contlnued) g) Mr. Roy Ozard a painter and artist requested permission to sketch on the museum grounds. MOTION #109/75 Moved by Wm. Clark, seconded by B. Davies that Mr. Roy Ozard be allowed to enter the museum grounds for the purposes of sketching and painting. h) The Greenwood General Store have offered their assistance to the museum. It was suggested that a letter of appreciation be sent to the Greenwood General Store. 3. REPORTS Administrators Report The Administrator reported that portraits of four previous members of the museum board should be preserved and put up in the Museum. - The church service was held on October 5th 1975. The tent has not as yet been paid for. MOTION #110/75 Moved by Wm. Clark, seconded by D. McLean that $50.00 be forwarded to Mr. Walter Pfeiffer to be paid for the tent. CARRIED The rent in to amount of $200.00 should be paid to Mr. Rogers for the barns. This rent has been paid by him to the Government of Ontario. The furnace at the schoolhouse It was noted that the furnace at the schoolhouse should be cleaned out. The Rodman Sheetmetal Company which installed the furnace could be contacted for this purpose. The Tremayne map needs a restoration by professionals. The Administrator reported that the Royal Ontario Museum would like to look at it. MOTION 111/75 Moved by D. McLean, seconded by B. Davies that the Royal Ontario Museum be asked to repair the Tremayne map. CARRIED The Markham Museum has a building wjth controlled atmosphere for the preservation of artifacts and documents. It is worth looking at. Mr. Stringer wants to sell the contents and the building of the woodworking shop in Claremont. MOTION #112/75 Moved by D. McLean, seconded by K. Spratley that the Administrator be authorized to spend $500.00 for the machinery in the Claremont workshop and for moving the same. CARRIED - 48 - 13/75 3. REPORTS (Continued) Mr. Dick Corkery of LaFlæhe Saskatchewan knows a man who has a Romley tractor he wants $100.00 for it. MOTION #113/75 Moved by W. Biernacki, seconded by WID. Clark that the Rom1ey tractor be bought and that the transport company be contacted to transport the engine to the museum. CARRIED Mr. Russ. Pilkey will repair the windows in the museum for $45.00. A group of sixty-five pupils want to come to the museum on October 30th 1975 from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon. Mr. Leslie Smith wants to sell a wagon sleigh and some timbers for $100.00. MOTION 114/75 Moved by D. McLean, seconded by Wm. Clark that the Administrator be authorized to spend $150.00 to acquire the wagon and sleigh and timbers from Mr. Leslie Smith and transport the same to the museum. CARRIED Coultis Sale MOTION #115/75 Moved by Wm. Clark, seconded by Councillor Spratley that a letter of thanks be sent to Mr. Leslie Harbran for his co-operation with the museum in the Coultis sale. CARRIED It was announced that Mayor G. Ashe is in the hospital. MOTION #116/75 Moved by D. McLean, seconded by B. Davies that a letter be sent to Mayor G. Ashe expressing the concern of the board for his health and wishing him a speedy recovery. CARRIED 3. NEW BUSINESS a) Recommendation of Technical Advisory Committee Re: Green Family MOTION 117/75 Moved by Wm. Clark, seconded by W. Biernacki that it be recommended to the Museum Board that in view of the recent death of Miss Edna Green, and the fact that the new Museum Site was formerly Green property, the Green family be recognized in the Museum in a way to be determined at a future date; and that an appropriate letter be sent to the Green family expressing condolences, and informing them of the fact that the Museum is happy to locate on a site made historical by the Green family. CARRIED - 49 - 13/75 3. NEW BUSINESS (Continued) a) Re: Green Family (Continued) The letter mentioned in the Motion is to be sent to the Executor, Mr and Mrs. A.H. Burk Box 920 Espanola, Ontario and to: Mr. and Mrs. Don Beckstein 101 Bentham Parkway Snyder, New York U.S.A. 14226 an extra copy is to be sent to Mr. and Mrs. Beckstein for the former Lois Green. b) Antique Purchases MOTION #118/75 Moved by D. McLean, seconded by W. Biernacki that the Administrator be authorized to spend an amount of $1,602.85 for the purpose of purchasing antiques. CARRIED c) Guides and Training Program - 1976 This item was deferred to the next meeting. d) Pictorial Presentation Councillor Spratley suggested that in the new location a building be set apart for a Pictorial Presentation of the various areas within the municipality of Pickering. MOTION 119/75 Moved by Councillor Spratley, seconded by D. McLean that the Museum Board assemble pictures of Historical note of each of the hamlets and areas within Pickering and that the Historical Society be asked to co-operate in this project. CARRIED e) Mr. K. Adams wishes to sell a German Industrial Engine 1902-1906 The Administrator will look into this matter. 5. OTHER BUSINESS a) The Museum Board agreed to the relocation of the Steam Engine. b) Greenwood Basket Factory Councillor Spratley explained that the Greenwood basket factory was actually the original Doughton Carriage Works. The original structure has been re-arranged. Councillor Spratley will obtain pictures of the original structure. - 50 - 13/75 5 OTHER BUSINESS (Continued) c) Greenwood School It was suggested that a building committee be formed to investigate the Greenwood School and to write a report concerning the projected cost. MOTION #120/75 Moved by D. McLean seconded by W. Biernacki that a Building Committee be formed of Mr. Wm. Clark, Mr. John Devitt, Mr. Peter Byberg, Councillor K. Spratley to study the Greenwood School and to present a report to the Museum Board. CARRIED d) Board of Education Representation on Technical Advisory Committee MOTION #121/75 / .j Moved by Councillor Spratley, seconded by B. Davies that a letter be sent to the Durham Board of Education and to the Durham Region Seperate School Board asking them for a representative member to sit on the Technical Advisory Committee. CARRIED e) Budget Mr. W. Bienacki and Councillor K. Spratley will form a committee to prepare the 1976 budget. f} R. Miller - Resignation Mr. R. Miller announced that because of the expropriation of his home and shop at Brougham he will have to relocate. He will be moving ~o Hawkestone in June of 1976. Because of these circumstances he will not be able to serve on the museum board in 1976 and he resigned his position as Administrator as of the end of the year 1975. Several members of the board expressed their best wishes and good luck to Mr. R. Miller and noted that nobody will be able to do the job that he has done for the Museum. It was noted that he was the motivating power behind the establishment of the Museum and that the Museum will always be greatly indebted to him for his tremendous effort. g) Demonstrations at Sheridan Mall On Thursday, Friday and Saturday, October 16th, 17th and 18th 1975 there were demonstrations of Pioneer Crafts at Sheridan Mall. h) Remuneration to Wm. Clark MOTION #122/75 Moved by Councillor Spratley, seconded by W. Biernacki that expenditures incurred by Wm. Clark to the amount of $500.00 be paid. CARRIED - 51 - 13/75 5. OTHER BUSINESS (Continued) i) Administrator's Fee MOTION #123/75 Moved by Councillor Spratley, seconded by Wm. Clark that the Administrator be paid the honorarium of $500.00. CARRIED 6. NEXT MEETING The next meeting will be held on November 18th 1975 at 8:00 p.m. 7. ADJOURNMENT Moved by W. Biernacki, seconded by B. Davies that the meeting adjourn at 11:35 p.m. Date Chairman
