A By-law to prohibit the running at
large of dogs within the Township of
Picketing, to licence dogs, to provide
for regulations of Dog Pound services,
and to repeal By-law Number 2504°
1. In this By-law
(a) ~dog~' means any dog, male or female.
(b) ~'owner" of a dog includes any person who possesses
or harbours a dog and "owna""and "owhed" have a
corresponding meaning.
(c) ~Running at large~ - a dog shall be deemed to be
running at large when found on a highway or other
public place and not under the control of any person.~.'
(d) "Spayed Female" means a female dog which has been
operated on by a licenced veterinarian to prevent
conception.
(e) ~Dog Kennel~ shall mean a kennel of pure-bred dogs
registered in the Register of The Canadian Kennel
Club, Incorporated.
~ 2. NO dog shall run at large and no person shall permit a dog
owned by him to run at large in the Township of Pickering.
~ 3. No person shall keep or maintain any dog in the Township of
Pickering unless such dog has been licenced and registered
under this by-law and subject to the provisions of the Dog
Tax and Live Stock and Poultry Protection Act wears a collar
to which is affixed a dog tag issued for the current year for
the said dog.
4. The owner of every dog in the Township of Pickering shall
on or before the fifteenth day of February in each year
pay to the Township of Picketing a licence fee in accordance
with the following schedule:
(a) licence fee for first male dog ............... $5.00
licence fee for a second male dog in a
household ........ $7.50
licence fee for each additional male dog
over two in a household ............ $15.00
(b) licence fee for first female dog ............. $8.00
licence fee for a second female dog in a
household ....... $15.00
licence fee for each additional female over
two in a household ............ $25.00
(c) Licence fee to cover all dogs in a dog
kennel of pure-bred dogs
in a registered kennel ......... $10.00
~t~ (d) dogs shall be registered by their owners on or before
the 15th day of February in each year on registration
forms provided for the purpose° Dog owners shall
provide the following information:
(1) The name and address of the owner of the dog;
(2) Name and description of the dog to be licenced;
(3) Such further or other information as may be
required by Council of the Township of Picketing.

II ,~ (e) the issuer of li cenc~s, upon payment of the proper
licence fee, shall issue to the owner of every dog
a tag having inscribed upon it s serial number and
the year for which it was issued, and the said issuer
of licences shall also i~sue to the owner of a dog
so licenced a receipt for the licence fee so paid
and the licence shall expire on the thirty-first day
of December of the year for which it was issued.
~l~ (f) the licence fee paid pursuant to subsections (a) or
(b) or (c) of this section shall be applied only in
respect to the dog licence for which the said fee
was paid and shall not be transferable, nor shall
the dog tag issued for a dog be used for or affixed
to the collar of any dog other than the dog for which
it was issued.
I/ ~ (g) the owner of a dog which has been duly licenced and registered under this by-.law may obtain a dog tag to
replace a dog tag which has been lost upon payment of
a fee of twenty-five cents°
M 5. No person shall allow his doE to become a nuisance nor
permit it to howl or bark excessively. Any person so
aggrieved may appear before a Justice of the Peace and
swear out an Information on charging the owner with a
breach of this section.
l~ 6. Any person shall be entitled to take charge of any dog
found running at large and deliver the same to the Dog
Control Officer of the Township of Pickering.
~ 7. Any unlicenced dog or any dog found running at large
contrary to any provisions of this By-law shall be
impounded.
(a) the dog pound of the Township of Pickering shall be
open for the purpose of returning and retrieving dogs
between the hours of ~:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. and also
between 8:O0 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and
between 9:00 a.m~ and 11:OO a.m. on Saturdays.
(b) the dog pound shall be closed on Sundays.
~ 8. Any dog found running at large may be lodged in the dog
pound and shall be fed and watered for a period of not
more than seventy-two (72) hours plus days that the pound
is closed, after the owner has been notified~ wherever
possible, that the dog bas boen com_mittnd to the pound.
9. The Control Officer of the Township of Picketing shall

within twenty-four (24) hours f~om the seizure of any dog
bearing a tag, or within twenty-four (24) hours from the
time any dog bearing a tag is taken into the dog pound,
when possible, notify the owner of the seizure with the
exception of Sundays.
~/ ~ (a) if the owner of any dog impounded that bears a tag fails to claim his or her dog or dogs ~nd pay the
Townsh~~ of Pickering a Three Dollar ($3.OO) impounding
fee together with a charge of Two Dollars and Fifty
Cents ~$2.50) per day or any part of a day such dog
or dogs shall be held for not more than twenty-four
(24) hours and shall be disposed of and the owner
shall have no recourse against the Municipality or
the Dog Control Officer.
(b) should dog be impounded by the Dog Control Officer
any
more than once in any one calender year, the owner,
shall pay to the Township of Picker~ng an impounding
fee of Five Dollars ($5.00) and Five Dollars ($5.OO)
for each day or part of a day that the said dog is
held by the Dog Control Officer before the dog is
released to him.

'~ (c) the fee for picking up a dog and disposing of, or
selling same through the services of the Dog Control
Officer shall be Five Dollars ($5.00).
10. If there is no tag on any dog seized or taken or put into
the dog pound, the Dog Control Officer shall destroy it
at the end of a seventy-two (72) hours period plus days
that the pound is closed, if same has not in the meantime
been sold or claimed.
11. Dogs that have to be destroyed at the end of the
seventy-two (72) hours period shall be destroyed or
disposed of in such manner as Council may from time to time
by resolution direct.
12. No dog shall be returned to the owner unless it has been
licenced in accordance with the provisions of this by-law,
and any owner of a dog without a tag and any purchaser of
a dog shall obtain a tag for the current year before
delivery is made.
13. A penalty of not more than Fifty Dollars ($50.00) exclusive
of costs shall be imposed upon every person who contravenes
any of the provisions of this by-law and every such penalty
shall be recoverable under the provisions of the Summa~
Convictions Act.
lt. This by-law shall be effective as of the First day of
April, 1966.
15. By-law Number 2504 is hereby repealed.
