A BY-LAW OF THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF PICKERING TO ESTABLISH
CERTAIN BENEFITS FOR THOSE EMPLOYEES OF THE TOWNSHIP OF PICKERING NOT
COVERED BY THE UNION AGREEMENT,
THE COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF PICKERING ENACTS AS
FOLLOWS:
INSURANCE COVERAGE
(a) The Township shall pay 50% of the premiums of the Federals-
Provincial Hospital Care Insumance.
(b) The Township shall permit payroll deductions from the wages
of employees who wish to establish a Sickness Insurance Plan
group, Premiums for this coverage shall be payable 100%
by the Township employees,
(c) The Township shall pay 50% of the premium of the group life
insurance.
(d) The Township shall pay 50% of the Pension Plan.
2, SICK LEAVE CREDIT GRATUITIES
(1) The Township shall establish a system of sick leave credits
under which an employee shall be entitled to a credit of one
and one-half days for each month of regular attendance.
(2) The credits shall be cumulative.
(3) The credits shall be entered into a register in-form 1 to
be maintained i-~ ,. ~m~nt in which the employee is
(4) No credits shall be given to an employee in any month who
is absent from duty in that month;
(a) For more than six (6) days for any reason other than
vacation leave of absence,
(b) Without leave of absence,
(5) An employee shall not be granted any sick leave credits or
any fringe benefits until he has completed three months
continuous employment with the Township of Pickering.
(6) No employee shall receive pay for absence caused by sickness,
in excess of his accumulated credits.
(7) Payment for sick leave shall be made at the prevailing rate
in effect during the absence of the employee. For those
employees engaged on a salary basis~ the salary shall be
continued until the employee has exhausted his accumulated
credits and for those employees on an hourly ~asis, the
hourly rate multiplied by the normal working hours for the
particular period, shall be paid until the employee has
exhausted his accumulated credits.
(8) After three (3) days absence caused by sickness no leave
with pay shall be allowed unless a certificate of a duly
qualified medical practitioner is forwarded to the head
of the employee's department certifying the inability of
the employee to attend to his or her official duties. The
head of the department may require an employee to submit
a doctor's certificate for a period of absence of less than
three days.

(9) The head of the department may grant leave of absence with
pay upon any special grounds to an employee and the period
of leave of absence shall be charged against the credits of
the employee.
(10) An employee shall be allowed three (3) days off with pay
when a death occurs in the immediate family. Immediate
family to mean: Father, Mother, Father-in-law, Mother-in-law,
Sister, Brother, Wife, Son, Daughter or other relative
living with the employee
(11)On retirement or separation an employee shall be entitled
to an amount equal to his salary, wages or other remuner-
ation for one-half the number of days standing to his credit
and in any event, not in excess of the amount of one-half
year's earnings at the rate received by the employee
immediately prior to termination of employment and providing
that the employee has completed five years of service with the
Corporation of the Township of Pickering im~nediately prior
to termination of employment.
(12)Employees of departments where no record of Sick Leave
Credits has been previously kept, shall be granted a credit
of 1 day sick leave for each month that they have been employed
by the Township of Pickering.
(13) An employee shall be provided with an annual statment of the
Sick Leave Credit Gratuities accumulated to his or her
credit. This statement shall be signed ~y-~
-6m~. ~ ~par~men~ and shall be given to t~e employee
on or before January 31st, of each year.
3. STATUTORY HOLIDAYS
(a) Ail permanent employees shall be granted the following
holidays with pay:
(i) New Year's Day
(ii) Good Friday
(iii) Victoria Day
(iv) Dominion Day
(v) Civic Holiday
(vi) Labour Day
(vii) Thanksgiving Day
(viii) Christmas Day
(ix) Boxing Day
(x) Any other holiday that may be proclaimed
by the Reeve of the Township of PicRering,
(b) In order that an employee shall be granted a statutory
holiday with pay, the employee must work the normal working
day immediately before and after the holiday.
4. ANNUAl, VACATION
(a) All permanent employees shall be granted 2 weeks annual
vacation after one year's service, 3 weeks annual vacation
after ten year's service, and four weeks after twenty-five
years' service,
(b) One year's annual vacation may be carried over to the
following year.
(c) When a statutory holiday falls on a day of an employee's
scheduled vacation, the employee shall be entitled to an
additional day of vacation, provided that the necessary
arrangements have been made with the head of the department
prior to the commencement of the vacation period.
4. (d) Permanent employees shall include all employees whose
service is continuous for such length of time as to
qualify them for the applicable annual vacation.
(e) Permanent employees shall be granted annual vacation
according to seniority and at a time approved by the
head of his or her department.
5. AGE OF RETIREMENT
Ail permanent male employees shall be retired at the age of
65 years. Ail permanent female employees shall be retired
the age of 60 years. The Council may~ at the request of an
employee~ extend the compulsory retirement age of such
employee~ upon such terms as the Council deems fit.
6. HOURS OF EMPLOYMENT
All employees not covered by a Union Agreement shall work a
