A BY-lAW OF THE TOWNSHIP OF PICKERING TO PROVIDE SPECIFICATIONS FOR SEPTIC
TANKS ~ND TILE DISPOSAL FIELDS.
BE IT ENACTED by the Municipal Council of the Township of Pickering
_THAT
1. APPLICATION AND BLOCK PLAN
An application for the installation or alteration of a System when made
to the Medical Officer of Health shall contain the following information:
(a) A bloc~ plan showing width and length of lot and width and length
of building.
(b) Distance of building from lot lines.
(c) Location of any proposed or existing well.
(d) Any marked difference of elevation within the lot.
(e) The location of the proposed septic tank and the layout of the
weeping tile bed (this shall be shown in full detail).
A separate block plan for each house shall be submitted.
(f)The above shall not apply to new sub-divisions where a registered
plan has been given Health Unit approval in the first instance.
2. GRADING
1.All grading and levelling of the lo% shall be completed prior %o
the laying of the tile bed.
2. Wqlere any grading or levelling of the lot has been done and top
soil removed therefrom, suitable replacement of such soil shall
be made, where necessary, in accordance with the requirements of
the Medical Officer of Health.
3. LOCATION OF SEPTIC TANK
The tank shall be located at least foul- feet from the wall of any
building and at least four feet from any lot line.
2,,. All iron to iron fittings shall be packed with oakum and lead jointed.
No tank shall be on filled ground. If building on distu/~bed soil
precautions to the satisfaction of the Medical Officer of Health shall
be taken to ensure freedom from settling of the tank. The tank shall

Fer single family dwellings no exceeding 5 bedrooms refer to the following
table of inside sizes:

NOTE:. A special septic tank shall be required, for~
(a) Multiple family dwellings.
(b) Apartment buildings.
(c) Stores - with or without attached living quarters or any apart-
ment above the store or stores.
(d) Commercial buildings.
(e) Industrial buildings.
(f) Schools and all public buildings.
(g) "Public Access Building" as defined by the Provincial Regulations
Respecting Plun~ing and Sewers.

Officer of Health.
5. SEPTIC TANK CONSTRUCTION
1. Septic tanks shall be constructed of:
(al) Poured concrete (mix I part cement, 3 parts sand, 2 parts
stone, one-inch screen).
(b) Pre-cast concrete (mix I part cement, 3 parts sand, 2 parts
stone.)
(c) Concrete block (stone aggregate) parged internally with two
coats of cement p~aster containing 1 to 4 mix, or other
approved water proofing materials.
(d) The bottom and walls of the tank shall be poured all in one
operation with the Fittings in their correct position.
(e) Other types of tanks will require approval of Medical Officer
of Health.
6. TRENCH LOCATION
1. Weeping tile beds shall be located at lesst 100 feet distant From

2. Weeping tile shall be laid in trenches not less that FOUR feet
centre to centre and no weeping tile line of any trench shall be
closer than FIVE feet to any lot line or closer that FIFTEEN Feet
to any building Foundation.
3. No weeping tile trench shall be located under any roadway, driveway~
lane, pathway or traffic way.
NO RUBBISH OR C.LA~
Cinders, ashes or any other rubbish such as broken paint cans or
any other debris shall not be placed in a weeping tile bed, nor
shall any clay fill be introduced to the weeping tile bed area.
7. TANK OUTLET AND INLET PIPES
THE OUTLET PIPE
The outlet pipe from the septic tank to the header shall be of
4-inch glazed tile with cemented joints or os such other material
approved by the Medical OFficer of Health. The header shall be of
at least 4-inch glazed tile with cemented joints or other approved
material~ and joints with the first weeping tile of each lateral
cemented into the T branch serving that lateral.

TANK INLET_PIPE
The extension from pl~bing to septic tank shall be one of the
following, east iron, bituminous fibre, asbestos cement. The first
6 feet of any soil drain leaving a building shall be of one, or a
con~ination, of these materials. The 6 ft. ~hall be measured at right
angles to the building.
8. STANDARD TILE BED SIZE
1. In sandy soils the bed shall contain a minimum of 200 feet of
weepin~ tile.
2. In clay soils the bed shall contain a minimum of 400 feet of
weeping tile.
3. A single family dwelling of more than three bedrooms shall require
a special tile bed.
4. Tile runs shall not exceed 50 feet in length except mlder special
circumstances as approved by the Medical Officer of Health.
5. All the tile bed patterns shall be subject to the approval of the
Medical Officer of Health.
9. STANDARD TRENCH
SAwN_DY ~OILS: The weeping tiles in the bed shall be laid with a slope of
4 inches in 100 feet with a space of one-quarter inch between the tile
butts. The tops of the tile butts shall be shielded with an approved
material. They shall be laid in trenches not less than 12 inches wide
at the bottom. The tiles shall be laid on a bed of crushed stone ¥-znch
size or ~ inches gravel to a depth of 3 inches the full width of the
trench. The tile shall be covered with 3 inches of ~-inch stone or
inches of gravel making a total depth of 11 inches of stone or gravel
over the full width of the trench. Minimum depth of tile shall be 12 inches.
Maximum depth of tile shall be 18 inches.
cLAY SOILS: The weeping tiles in the bed shall be laid with a slope of
not mere than 4 inches in 100 feet and with space of one-quarter inch
between the tile butts. The tops of the tile butts shall be shielded
with an approved material. They shall be laid in trenches not less
than 18 inches wide at the bottom. The tiles shall be laid on a bed
of ~ inches crushed stone or ~ inches gravel to a depth of O inches and
the full width of the trench. The tile shall be covered by 3 inches of
~-inch crushed stone or i} inches gravel, making a total depth of 14 inches
of stone or gravel ever the full width of the trench. ~-inch stone or
~-inch gravel shall be placed at the end of each tile line to a depth,
width and length of six inches. Trenches shall be back-filled with sand
or light soil to finished grade.
Maximum depth of tile shall be 18 inches.
10. TILE BED DA~GE
NO truck, bulldozer or any other vehicle shall be driven on or over a
weeping tile bed area after the smne has been eon~nenced. The septic
ta]f~ constructor or contractor shall provide proper protection a~ainst
any damage to such bed, and such contractor or constructor will be
required to repair any damage to the weeping tile bed.
LAUNDRY WASTE - KITCHEN WASTE
Waste from all plumbing fixtures including the kitchen sink shall dis-
charge into the septic tank. Laundry waste shall be run or pumped into
the septic tank. Other methods must be approved by the Medical Officer
of Health. Surface or storm water or foundation drainage shall not be
drained into any private sewage disposal system.

ROOF WATER
No person shall permit or cause to be permitted any roof water to be
discharged into the area where the septic tank and weeping tile bed are
located. The builder or owner of the premises shall make provision for
the roof water to be carried to the ditch or roadway in accordance with
the established practice and to the satisfaction of the Medical Officer
of Health.
11. MAN-HOLES
1. An 18" x 18" minimum dimension man-hole or its equivalent shall be
placed directly over the inlet and outlet of the septic tank.
2. A 4" thick removable convrete man-hole cover or its equivalent shall
be placed over each man-hole.
3. Sectional reinforced slabs of 4" thickness will be pemnitted.
4. The top of the inlet branch or baffle shall be 2" from the underside
of the tank cover. The outlet branch or baffle shall be 4" from the
underside of the tank cover.
5. The top of the septic tank shall be covered with clean top soil,
unless special approval is given by the Medical Officer of Health.
12. INSPECTION
1. At least 48 hours notice must be given when an inspection is required;
phone or write the Health Unit.
2. No septic tank system shall be deemed to be ready for inspection until:
(a) All forms have been removed.
(b) The floor and walls of the septic tank have been made watertigh*.
(c) The connection between the house plumbing and septic tank be
exposed and the header lines left open.
(d) Man-hole covers are in place and all lead joints caulked.
(e) Ail tile and stone or gravel are in place, trenches open and all
glazed tile and joints exposed.
(f) The contractor or his representative shall be present.
No person under any circumstances may use, or permit to be used, any system
before such system shall have been duly completed and inspected and until
such system has been approved by the Medical Officer of Health.
CLEANING TANK
No person shall empty or cause to be emptied any septic tank in such a way
that the effluent therefrom is deposited on the top of the ground.
