The Council of the Corporation of ;:he Township of Pickering EIIACTS
AS FOLLOWS:
PART 1 - DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this by-law:-
(a) Commercial Motor Vehicle means a motor vehicle havinr6 permanently
attached thereto a truck or delivery body and includes an ambulance,
hearse, casket wagon, fire appara?us, police patrol, motor bus and
tractor, used for hauling purposes on the highways.
(b) Corner means the point of intersection of curbs or edges of the
portion of the highway used for vehicular traffic.
(c) Crosswal!c means that portion of a roadway ordinarily included
within the prolongation or connection of the lateral lines of
sidewalks or any portion of a roadway distinctly indicated for
pedestrian crossing by lines or other markings.
(d) Gross Weii:ht means the combined weight of vehicle and load,
(e) Highway - See Street or highway.
(f) Intersection means the area embraced within the prolonq,aeion or
connection of the lateral curb lines or if none, then of the lateral
boundary lines,of two or more roadways which join one another at an
angle, whether or not one crosnon :he other.
(g) Park or Parking when prohibited, means the standing o a vehicle,
whether occupied or not, excep_ when standing temporarily for the
purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading
merchandise or passengers.
(h) Pedestrian means a person afoot and invalids and children in
wheeled carriages.
(i) Roadway means the part of the highway that is improved; designed or
ordinarily used for vehicular traffic, but does not include the
shoulder, and, where a highway includes two or more separate roadways,
the term "roadway" refers to any one roadway separately and not to
all of the roadways collectively.
(j) Sidewalk means that portion of a street between the r._rD lines or the
laternt[,*ncs of a roadway and the adjacent property lines intended
for the use of pedestrians.
(k) Stand or standing when prohibited, means the halting of a vehicle,
whether occupied or not, except for the ,purpose
of and while actually engaged in receiving or dischar&int passengers.

(1) Stop when required, means a comp'_eLe cessation of movement.

(m) Stop or Stopping,when prohibited, means the halti.ne of a vehicle
even momentarily, whether occupied or not, except when necessary
to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the
directions of a constable or other police of" cer or of a traffic
control sign or si^nal.
(a) Street of Hi0way includes a common and public highway, street,
avenue, parkway, drivewa", square, place, bridge, viaduct or
trestle, designed and intended for., or used by, the general public
for the passage of vehicles.
(o) Traffic includes pedestrians, ridden or herQed animals, vehicles
and other conveyances either singly or together while using any
street for purposes of travel,
(g) Traffic Control Device means any sign; or roadway, curb or sidewalk
marking; or other device erected or placed under the authority of
the Council for the purpose of guiding or directing; traffic,
(q) Traffic Signal means any device manually, electrically or
mechanically operated for the regulation of ;traffic.
(r) Vehicle includes a motor vehicle, trailer; traction engine, farm
tractor, road-building machine and any vehicle drawn, propelled
or driven by any kind of power, including muscular power, but does
not include a motorized snow vehicle or the cars of electric or
steam railways running only upon rails,
PART 11 - OBEDIENCE TO TRAFFIC REGULATIONS
1. Police to Enforce By-law
The police department shall enforce the provisions of this by-law.
PART 111 - PARKING - (Method of Parking,)
1. Parallel
No person shall park a vehicle on any street other than a one-way street
unless on the ri-ht-hand side of the street havi.n,, re^ard for the direction
in which the vehicle had been proceeding, and unless the right-front and right
rear wheels or runners of the vehicle are parallel to and distant respectively
not more than six inches from the edge of the roadway, provided that this
provision shall not apply where angle parking is specifically authorized by
by-law.
2. karlcinr prohibited
(1) In Specified Places
No person shall park. a vehicle in any of the following places;-
On a sidewalk
In front of a public or private dr4.veway.
Within an intersection.
Within ten feet of a fire hydrant.
On a crosswalk
Within twenty feet of a crosswalk at an intersection.
On any bridge, or in any subway, or the approaches thereto.

On Any street in such a manner as co obstruct traffic.
In such a position as will prevent the convenient removal of any
other vehicle previously parl_e,9 or standing.
In front of the entrance to a iio::el.
In front of the entrance to an office building.
In front of the entrance to any ..lace where goods or merchandise are
regularly delivered or removed.
In front of the entrance to a hospital.
In front of the entrance to a Theatre, auditorium or other building
while lar.-e assemblies are being held in such theatre, auditorium or other
buildin-, or for a reasonable time immediately preceding and following
such assemblal-es. '
On any roadway for a longer per:.od than three hour$ between 12 o1clokk
midnight: and 7 01clock a.m.
On the boulevard of any curbed street, between the curb and the adjacent
property line.
(2) in Specified Places Where Sins on Display
When properly worded signs have been erected and are on display. no
person shall park a vehicle in any of the following places;
Within s'ifty feet of any intersection on any through highway.
Within twenty-five feet of the lot on which a fire hall is located
on that side of the street on which such fire hall is located or within
one hundred feet of such lot on '_he opposite side of said street.
Within eighty feet of any point designated as a bus or coach stop.
Between D:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.ip. upon that side of the street adjacent
to any school property.
(3) Bus and Taxicab Stands
(a) No person shall stand or park a motor bus or taxicab upon any
street in say business or residential district at any place
other than at a bus stop or taxicab stand respectively, except
that this provision shall not prevent the driver of any such
vehicle from temporarily stopping the vehicle in accordance
with other stopping or parking regulations at any place for the
purpose of and while actually engaged in loading or unloading
passengers.
(b) No person shall stop, stand or park a vehicle other than a
bus in a bus stop, or other than a taxicab in a taxicab stand
when any such stop or stand has been officially designated
and appropriately signed, except that the driver of a passenger
vehicle may temporarily stop therein for the purpose of and while
actually engaged in loading or unloading passengers when such
stopping does not in::erfere with any bus or to:Acab waiting to
enter or about to enter such zone.

(5) No person shall park or stand any vehicles on any highway or portion
thereof except as follows:
(a) Where there is a raised curb, on the right side on the
travelled portion of the highway having regard to the
direction, such vehicle was proceeding with its front
and rear wheels parallel to and not more than 12 inches
out from such curb.
(b) Where there is no curb or a rolled curb, wi:h the right front
and rear wheels parallel to and as near to the right hand limit
of the highway as is practicable without stopping or parking
over a sidewalk or footpath or over any par*_ of the highway where
grass is grown or which is not intended for the use of vehicles.

PART 1V - OPERATION OF VEHICLES
1. TURNS
(a) When properly worded signs to that effect have been erected and
are on display, no person operatin£; a vehicle in the direction
hereinafter name' in Column 1 shall turn such vehicle to the
left at the intersection named in Column 2 'uring the period
between 3;30 p.v, and 5;30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

The driver of a vehicle emerging from a driveway, lane, lot or
';wilding shall stop the vehicle immediately prior to driving
onto the sidewalk and shall not enter the roadway until he can
do so in safety.
Funeral and Other Processions
(a) No person shall inzersec*_ a funeral or other properly
authorized procession while it is in mo?-ion except under
the direction of a police officer.
(b) The driver of a vehicle in a funeral or other procession
shall drive as near co the right-hand ed;e of the road-
way as practicable and follow the vehicle ahead as close
as is practicable and safe,
PART V - PENALTIES
1, Any person violating any of the provisions o this by-law shall be
subject to a penalty of not more than Ten Dollars ($10.00) for the
first offence and not wore than Twenty-five Dollars ($25.00) for
every subsequent offence, exclusive of costs, and all such penalties
shall be recoverable under the Ontario Summary Convictions Act.
PART V1
1. ONZRIO HIGINAY TRAFFIC ACT TO GOVERN
The provisions of this By-law shall be subject to the provisions of
The Highway Traffic Act and amendments thereto.

3. This By-Law shall not become effective until approved by the Department
of Transportation and Co-ixaun_cation and until the signs referred to
herein have been erected and are on display.
