4. Delegations/Presentations
4.1 Durham Region Community Safety & Well Being Plan
With the aid of a PowerPoint presentation, K. Allore-Engel, Community Safety and Well-Being Manager, Durham Region, provided a summary of the Region of Durham’s Community Safety and Well-Being Plan. K. Allore-Engel noted four levels of risk
mitigation, an illustration of Durham’s approach to plan
development, and discussed Durham’s online Information Hub. The presentation included an implementation framework and a summary of the Building Safer Communities Fund implementation projects.
A discussion ensued between Committee Members and K. Allore-
Engel regarding re-establishing Neighbourhood Watch groups and that there were ongoing discussions with the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS).
5. New Business
5.1 Durham Region – Stakeholder Discussion
Moved by C. Bamford
That the Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee include Durham Region as a non-voting Stakeholder Organization in the Terms of Reference.

5.2 Road Safety Discussion Forum
E. Knox introduced N. Emery, Coordinator, Traffic Operations, Engineering Services, and opened the floor for Committee discussion and questions.

A brief discussion ensued between Committee Members and N.
Emery regarding traffic calming methods and how they were enforced, identifying high incident areas, and inviting N. Emery or someone from their department to attend the Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee Meetings regularly.
5.3 Homelessness Subcommittee Update
C. Paxton provided an update on events supported by the Committee including the World Homeless Day event held October
10, 2024, at the DARS Farmhouse, the Whiskers and Wellness
Program which provided a free vet clinic for people experiencing housing insecurity, and that they were planning a screening of the documentary ‘Us and Them’ in the first quarter of 2025.
C. Paxton noted that Durham Region would be a standing member
of the Homelessness Subcommittee.
C. Paxton solicited committee members for ideas and suggestions for new Homelessness Subcommittee projects for 2025.
5.3 2024 Year End Report & 2025 Work Plan
E. Knox noted that a draft of the 2024 Year End Report & 2025 Work Plan had been provided to the Committee for review and solicited the Committee for Comments.
Discussion between Committee Members ensued regarding how
the Regional Plan informed the City of Pickering’s Plan.

That the Community and Safety Well-Being Advisory Committee endorse the 2024 Year End Report and 2025 Work Plan.

5.4 Upcoming Initiatives
E. Knox provided a summary of recent initiatives including the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Program, the DARS Shower Program, a City run Lunch & Learn featuring Dementia-Friendly Communities (DFC), and the Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) Youth Food Security event,
Cooking Up Futures.
E. Knox also provided a summary of upcoming initiatives including the Human Trafficking Safety Event, February 20, 2025, the

Coldest Night of the Year annual fundraising event, February 22,
2025, the Safety, Self-Defence & Walking home seminar, March 8, 2025, and the Online Safety; Community Safety event, May 29, 2025.
A brief discussion ensued regarding the funding of the noted events.
