BY-LAW NUMBER 3503/90
Being a by-law to provide for the
numbering of buildings and lots in the
Town of Pickering.
Whereas pursuant to section 210.106 of the Municipal Act, R.S.O.
1980, c. 302, as amended, by-laws may be passed by the councils of
local municipalities for numbering the buildings and lots along any
highway, beach, park, reserve or any other property in the
municipality that it is considered necessary to number by the
council, and for affixing numbers to the buildings and for charging
the owner or occupant with the expense incident to the numbering of
his lot or property; and
Whereas it is deemed expedient to provide for the numbering of
buildings and lots;
NOW THEREFORE THE COUNCIL OF THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWN OF
PICKERING HEREBY ENACTS AS FOLLOWS:
1. In this by-law,
la) "Council" means the Council of the Corporation of the Town
of Pickering;
{b) "Director of Planning" means the Director of Planning of
the Corporation of the Town of Pickering or his designate;
(c) "highway" means any common or public highway in the
Corporation of the Town of Pickering and includes a street
and a bridge forming part of any highway or on, over or
across which a highway passes and "street" has a
corresponding meaning; and
(d) "Town" means the Corporation of the Town of Pickering.
2. The Director of Planning shall assign a number to every building
or lot abutting or fronting on a street within the Town.
3. The Director of Planning shall make and keep an official record
of municipal numbers of all buildings and lots abutting or
fronting on a street within the Town.
4. The numbers of all buildings and lots as set out in the official
record of municipal numbers maintained by the Director of
Planning shall be the official street numbers of all buildings
and lots within the Town.
5. Whenever a new principal building is erected along any street,
the Director of Planning shall assign a number to each such
building.
6. Every owner or occupant of a building which abuts or fronts on a
street shall affix to such building or inscribe thereon in a
prominent location so as to be clearly visible during the
daytime from the street the official street number assigned by
the Director of Planning.
7. Notwithstanding the provisions of Section 6 of this by-law,
where the building is situated more than 30 metres from the
abutting street, the owner or occupant of the building shall
affix the official street number to a permanent sign or
structure located as close as practicable to the front lot line
and in any case not more than 30 metres from the street.

8. Every owner or occupant of a building which abuts or fronts on a
street shall be responsible for the expense incident to the
numbering of the lot or property.
9. Whenever it becomes necessary to have the numbers changed on any
street or portion of a street, the Director of Planning shall
report to the Council and, if so directed by resolution of the
Council, shall thereafter renumber the buildings along the said
street or portion of the street and shall cause the owners of
property on the said street or portion of the street to be
notified and directed to remove the previous numbers and affix
new numbers to the buildings or premises in lieu thereof.
10. No person shall affix to any building or premises or, being the
owner or occupant, shall allow to be affixed or to remain
affixed thereto any number except that appearing in the official
record of municipal numbers maintained by the Director of
Planning as the number of such building or premises.
ll. Every person who contravenes any provision of this by-law is
guilty of an offence, and upon conviction thereof is liable to a
fine of not more than two thousand dollars, exclusive of costs,
recoverable under the Provincial Offices Act.
By-law read a first, second and third time and finally passed
this 25th day of June ,1990.
