T. Higgins welcomed members and guests to the
electronic Committee meeting.

5. New Business
5.1 Accessibility Core Staff Team (ACST) Festive
Meet & Greet
Committee Members introduced themselves
and provided updates on their personal
endeavors.
Jeffrey Beaton, Coordinator, Parks
Infrastructure, City of Pickering, noted that
City Staff were working on asset
management, and the rehabilitation of the
Dunmoore Park tennis court to construct a
dog park. T. Higgins noted the importance of
implementing tranquility measures for the
existing parklands in the City.
Discussion ensued on the survey for the
Service & Support Animal Initiative.
Members noted the need for accessible
housing in Pickering and the reluctance by
developers to build accessible housing.
Members advised a new version of
wheelchairs that allow for movement on
staircases and other advance features.
Members further raised concerns regarding
the high costs for adaptive devices.
T. Higgins noted that priorities for the new
year include ensuring accessibility of the
City’s website, transportation, the Service and
Support Animal Initiative, tranquility measures
in parks, accessible housing, and the Five-
Year Accessibility Plan. Discussion ensued
regarding the Five Year Accessibility Plan

and the uncertainties brought on by the
COVID-19 pandemic, and realigning the plan
to the term of Council. Further discussion
ensued regarding improving transit service in
Durham and the need for active
transportation.
Isabelle Janton, Senior Planner - Site
Planning, City of Pickering, displayed a video
of Rouge Valley Park by Parks Canada.
Committee members raised concerns
regarding flooding in the park.

Committee meetings will be held every 3rd
Wednesday of the month for 2021.
