Review and Approval of Minutes

of the Accessibility Advisory Committee be approved.

That the draft 2019 Accessibility Compliance Report
prepared by T. Higgins be endorsed for submission to
the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility.

5.1 Accessibility Best Practices for Pickering
Businesses
John McLellan appeared before the committee to
provide a brief introduction to Colin McCarthy.
C. McCarthy appeared before the committee to
provide information on Accessibility Best Practices for
Pickering Businesses.
C. McCarthy briefly spoke of his personal experience
with disability. He stated that his company is made of
10-20 employees who all have various types of
disabilities, and provides a vast array of expertise.
C. McCarthy stated that businesses can profit by
investing in cost effective ways to remove barriers to
accessibility. He stated that this could be done

through excellent accessible customer service. This
is achieved through front line live training.
C. McCarthy stated the importance of front line staff
having a thorough understanding of disability.
C. McCarthy spoke of the Guest Accessibility
Program (GAP) that his company has developed. He
stated that the program allows buildings to rate
themselves to see if it is Rick Hansen certified. He
noted, however, the Rick Hansen Foundation
Accessibility Certification is geared strongly towards
mobility and does not take cognitive disabilities into
consideration.
C. McCarthy noted that that GAP can be downloaded
to websites.
Due to lack of quorum, the meeting adjourned at 5:19
pm. Informal discussion ensued however, no
decisions of the Committee were made. Agenda
items for the December 11, 2019 meeting will be
deferred to January 8, 2019 as appropriate.
