A Meeting of Council was held on TUESDAY, the FOURTH day of SEPTEMBER, 1956,
at TEN o'clock in the rorenoon.

MOVED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Lawson, that Minutes of meeting held
August 1, 1956, be adopted. CARRIED
MOVED by Mr. Scott, seconded by Mrs. McpHerson, that Minutes of meeting
held August 13, 1956, be adopted. CARRIED
MOVED by Mr. Scott, seconded by Mrs. McPherson, that Minutes of meeting
held August 27, 1956, be adopted. CARRIED
The following CORRESPONDENCE was read:
1. A. C. MacKenzie, complaint about Police Department in not apprehending
persons who for past five years have broken windows, etc., in his un-
occupied house in Concession 1, Lot 30.
2. Taxes

3. East Woodlands Community Association - thanks for grant of $200.00.
4. Chesterhill DeveloDments Limited, advising that they hope that the
drainage problem in Plan 612 will soon be rectified to Township satis-
raction.
5. Town of Ajax, advising that their Fire Department will give service to:
(1) Harwood Drive, Ajax, to Highway 2, 300 feet either side.
(2) Lot 6, East side Pickering Beach Road from Canadian National
Railway to Base Line.
(3) Several houses in Beron Subdivision abutting Town more than 300 feet
east of Harwood Drive.
They recommend that a further meeting be called to discuss protection for
Pickering BeaCh.
6. Fairport Beach RateDayerS' Association request Council to take all steps
possible to reduce taxation. They feel that their area does not get its
share of Tax Dollar.
7. July Police ReDort
The following PERSONS, on MOTION, were heard:
1. Livestock InsDector. W. C. Willsgn, discussed several eases of damage to
sheep and goats.
2. Mr. W. B. Westney, of our Conservation Committee, reported on their work.
He stated *bat prospects were for large recreational areas at Wbitevale,
Greenwood, Claremont and Rouge Valley.
3. Mr. Watson, Garbage Collector, objected to picking up garbage on holidays and
making second weekly call to all places of business at Five Dollar rate. He
agreed to carry on holiday collection, but asked for more money for second
commercial call. It was agreed that salvage should not be put out with
garbage, but those haTing garbage should call Mr. Watson, who would tell
them when to put it out.

4. The Claremont Police Vill.E. Trustees met Council and discussed the new
proposed agreement. Agreed they would meet Council on September 24th
to further discuss matter and that Trustees advise their fire committee
to meet Council September 10th.
5. Mr. Baker recommended that six persons now on Old Age Pension be granted
Ten Dollars monthly supplementary assistance because of need of which
6~ would be paid by the Province.
6. Mr. Goslin reported he had increased assessments $210,000.00 on Gravel
Pits and added . 638,000.00 Supplementary Assessment to Roll since
October 1, 1955.
7. Councillor McPherson reported on the Ontario Municipal Association
Convention at Windsor.
8. Councillor Pu£h reported the new Cemetery Act, as is being made effective
for Erskine and Whitevale Cemeteries: Full Plot, l6feet by 16 feet, $125.00,
perpetual upkeep; one-half Plat, $ 75.00, perpetual upkeep; one-quarter Plot,
'45.00, perpetual upkeep; Single Plot, $25.00, perpetual upkeep.
Der cent is deposited with a trust company for perpetual upkeep.
MOVED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Lawson, that the official time of the Township
of Pickering revert from Daylight Saving time to Eastern Standard time, at 2 A. M.
Sunday, September 30th, 1956. CARRIED

MOVED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Scott, that Township grant ten dollars monthly
supplementary assistance to six persons on Old Age Pension who have need, as
recommended by the Welfa.e Officer. CARRIED
M~VED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mrs. McPherson, that the 1956 taxes of the Kiwanis
Club of . 27.30, be remitted. CARRIED

MOVED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Lawson, that Reeve and Clerk sign a duplicate
deed for Albert White Lot in Pickedng Village, purchased by him in the 1945 Tax
Sale, never registered, and lost prior to his death in 1955. CARRIED

Committee on WELFARE, as just read, be adopted. CARRIED
MOVED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Scott, that the Reeve grant his order on the TreE
to pay the several accounts as presented and passed in the various reports as passet
this day. CARRIED
BY-LAW NUMBER 2178
Mr. Scott, seconded by Mrs. McPherson, moves for leave to introduce a By-Law of
the Township of Pickering to amend By-Law Number 1311 whiCh provided for fee for
Pound-Keepers and to appoint an additional Pound-Keeper, and that same now be
read a first time.
Mr. Scott, seconded by Mr. Pugh, moves that By-Law Number 2178 to amend By-Law
Number 1311 which povided for fee for Pound-Keepers and to appoint an additional
Po~d-Keeper, be now read a second time, and that Council go into Committee of
the Whole thereon.
The Committee of the Whc1e arises and reports the By-Law as read.
Mr. Scott, seconded by Mr. Lawson, moves that the report of the Committee of the
Whole on By-Law Number 2178 be adopted, and that the said By-Law be now read a
Third time and PASSED; that the Reeve and Clerk sign the s_e, and the Seal of
the Corporation be affixed thereto. CARRIED
CLERK'S INSTRUCTIONS
1. Advise Town of Ajax that our Fire Agreement be terminated as of September 10th.
2. Advise Pickering Beach Ratepayers' Association that Pickering Village Fire
Brigade will serve their area, and that Council will discuss with them
auxiliary equipment.
3. Prepare report on per capita tax and expense of TownShip through past years
on various assessments.
4. Order new Municipal Acts.
5. Ask Mr. Ruddy to meet Claremont Trustees re drainage.
6. Prepare costs of sidewalks on 3, 5 and 10 yearedebentures..
7. Submit Fire Area 1 1956 Budget and expenditures to next Council meeting.
8. Get information on Ontario County Fire Protection Mutual Aid.
9. Arrange meeting of representatives of Ajax, Pickering Village and Pickering
Township to meet Department of Health re Health Unit.
MOVED by Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mrs. McPherson, that this meeting do now adjourn to
meet again on TUESDAY, the 9th day of October, 1956, at the hour of 10. a.m.
