PICKERING TOWNSHIP MUSEUM BOARD 8/71
L A meeting of the Pickering Town-
ship Museum Board was held on
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER the EIGHTH,
1971 at the Museum Grounds
PRESENT: Mr. R. Miller
Mr. D. McLean
Mr. W. Clark
Mr. R. Freeman
N. C. Marshall, Secretary
1. FINANCES -
L. The Secretary presented a financial statement to the end
of August indicating expenditures of $7,203.21. In
L view of the fact that this amount exceeded the Council
grant of $6,000.00 it was agreed that further major
expenses be deferred until such time as the results of
History In Action were known. The Board noted revenue
L to date of approximately $1, 200.00.
2. CORRESPONDENCE -
a) Claremont Band -
The Secretary read for the benefit of the Committee
a letter received from Mr. Wm. Coates in connection
with the forthcoming History In Action celebrations.
Apparently some misunderstanding existed as to the
feelings of the band in connection with their part-
icipation in the parade. It was agreed that
Mr. Miller would speak with Mr. Coates and advise
the Secretary of the outcome.
b) Fiddler -
Mr. Coates had also mentioned that Mrs. John Heighway
of Unionville had expressed interest in attending
History In Action. She was a violin player and
wished to participate in the festivities. It was
agreed that the Secretary would write to
Mrs. Heighway and invite her to attend on Sunday
afternoon._ He should also determine whether or not
she wishes an accompanyist.
3. ADMINISTRATOR 'S REPORT -
Mr. Miller showed the members a copy of the paper done
on the History of Herbs by Mrs. McKenzie. This is to
be distributed at History In Action by her.
L Apparently Miss Wanstall was unable to attend the baking
contest on Saturday. There is a possibility that she
might be able to on the Sunday.
Mrs. Annis had put on a display at the Port Perry Fair
advertising History In Action.
Mention was made of the leak in the roof of the Cole
House over the kitchen. Mr. Miller agreed to have
Mr. Hope check this matter when he returned next week.

Mr. Miller hoped that the windows for the Harness Shop
and Hotel would be completed and installed prior to
History In Action. Mr. Pilkey was in the process of
glazing the windows for the Harness Shop.
4. HISTORY IN ACTION -
a) Corn Roast - •
Apparently the Rovers were to be asked to look after
the corn roast on the weekend. It was observed that
considerable preparation was required for this
L activity and Mr. Miller indicated that perhaps a
tripod suitable for the cauldron could be constructed
for this activity. It was suggested that the Rovers
L should plan to be in attendance a couple of hours
before the opening of the Museum in order that a
good fire could be built up.
The Committee reviewed briefly the activities planned
for History In Action. They noted the commitment
L made to the United Appeal insofar as the introduction
of the candidates for Miss United Appeal. It was
suggested that this should be delayed until after
the bands had completed their drill in order that
the two events not compete against each other.
L The Committee were reminded of the fact that at
least two bands would be participating in the parade
and possibly the Claremont Band as well. This could
entail a fair amount of expense but it wasn't
considered wise to a,sk either of the bands to with-
draw at this stage of the game simply because
another band approached earlier had decided to
attend.
5. PUBLICITY -
The Pickering United Community Fund had asked that the
L Museum Board enter a float in the parade slated for
October the 2nd which will be leaving the Pickering
Go Station at 11:00 a.m. Mr. Freeman agreed to arrange
for this.
On motion the meeting adjourned.
