MINUTES
A meeting of the Heritage Pickering Committee was held on Wednesday, September 9, 1998 at
7:30 p.m. in the Tower Room of the Civic Complex.

1. Adoption of Minutes
Moved by Peter Buerschaper, seconded by Janet Mehak that the Minutes of the June 10th
meeting be adopted as presented:
CARRIED .
2. Palmer House.
John advised the Committee of the outcome of the presentation he made to Council
concerning the Palmer House at the August 4th Council Meeting. If the Western Branch
Library is to be built on this site the house will be demolished. There was no indication of
what would happen to the home if the property is sold for commercial purposes.
3. Committee Exposure-

Discussion took place regarding public exposure of the Committee. Two suggestions made
were: a) raising the public's awareness of the committee by advertising and b) a Civic Award•
. for Heritage preservation. • .

. 4. Sub-Committees

John advised that seven homes are being considered for designation, one being the Tommy
Thompson house: The sub-committee are presently looking into the designation process.

5. Policies & Procedures Manual
John advised that the Town of Ajax have completed a Policies and Procedures Manual which
he will attempt to acquire a copy of and review to determine if it can be used, with some
revision, by the Committee.
6 Land Registry Office Books/APOLROD
No update at this time.
7. Liaison
a) Ajax LACAC - John has not yet attended any meetings.
b) Pickering Historical Society-No Update.
c) Altona Forest Advisory Committee -No Update.
d) Waterfront 2001 - Final Report available.
e) Rouge Park-No Update
fl Durham Heritage Fest - October 23 and 24, to be held in Oshawa. Historical groups have
been invited to attend and set up a display. Walking tour brochures will be requested from
Kathryn Tredway for this event. It was also decided to forward a letter to Kathryn
concerning completion of the inventory and the walking tour brochures.
8. Whitby Heritage Day
September 12th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
9. Other Business
a) Committee members were advised to submit travel allowance forms to claim any mileage
when on Committee business.
b) John advised that a Millenium Committee has been formed and an attempt is being made
to secure a couple of million dollars to enhance the Waterfront.
c) The Federal Government has extended the response time concerning Airport Lands and
John has suggested the Committee forward a response regarding this matter.
10. Next Meeting
The next meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, October 14th, 7:30 p.m. in the Tower
Room.
11. Adjournment
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 p.m.
