2. The following addressed Committee with respect to the Environmental
Assessment for the Restart of Pickering"A“:
. a) Dr. Nick Eyles, representing the Peer Review Team, introduced the team
members who reviewed the information contained in their report on the
Environmental Assessment Report for the return to service of Pickering
«A”
b) Dave Martin, representing Durham Nuclear Awareness, stated that there
will not be a fair assessment as long as the Canadian Nuclear Safety
Commission remains in charge of this assessment. Requests for
extensions on the commenting period were denied. Committee should
press for an independent panel environmental assessment of the Pickering
`A' restart. A panel review could fill in the gaps that exist. The Pickering
`A' restart should not be allowed until the completion•of a review. They
are counting on Committee to request an Independent Panel Review as
requested by 87% of the electors during the last election.
c) Chris Pennington, representing the Green Party of Canada, questioned
how the restart is going to affect the health and safety of the residents of
Pickering. What affect will the restart or shutdown have on the economy
of Pickering. If the nuclear station is shut down, Ontario Power
Generation still must pay taxes on the property. Residents want the fullest
and fairest possible assessment of the Pickering `A' restart.
d) Brian MacTavish, Site Vice President, Pickering Nuclear Generating
Station, stated that the gaps outlined by the Peer Review Team must be
addressed by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission. He outlined the
process that has taken place and is still to occur.
