Essay Writing Contest

Description:
Students of the Durham District School Board and Durham Catholic District
School Board will be invited to participate in an "Essay Writing Contest"
presented by the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations & Equity.
Guidelines:
1. Students will be separated into three (3) categories;
Elementary: Grade 2-5 &
Grade 6-8
High School: Grade 9-12
2. Students in each category will be asked to write an essay to a statement
created by the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations & Equity.
3. The essay should be up to 600 words (1 page).
4. Essay's that speak to ones personal experiences or personal thoughts
about the statement are recommended.
5. Student can only submit one essay.
6. Essays will be reviewed by a distinguished panel of judges (try to confirm
a News Advertiser writer/columnist, member of Durham West Arts
Concern, member of the Literary Guild, Pickering Public Library and
Community Members).
7. First, Second and Third places will be chosen for each category with an
option to award a "Honourable Mention".
Incentives:
1. The essay contest winners will be invited guests to recite their essay at
the 2005 Race Relations Forum hosted by the Pickering Advisory
Committee on Race Relations & Equity.
2. The forum will feature a guest speaker (to be confirmed) and will include
the media.
3. The essay contest winners will have their essay's displayed in the lobby of
the Pickering Civic Complex and featured on the City's website for the
month of March 2005.
4. Selected essays will be printed in the News Advertiser.
5. Selected essays will be included in a publication.

Timelines:
1. Committee to confirm statement and judges by November 4, 2004.
2. Committee to contact Board Directors by November 4, 2004 and discuss
what is planned and determine if they are interested and if the timeframes
work.
3. Invitations to participate will be mailed to school boards by mid November
2004. The invitation will include the statement and a submission deadline
of January 14, 2005.
4. Judges will review submissions and select winners in each category by
February 11, 2005.
5. Contest winners will be notified by February 28, 2005.
6. Committee to prepare for March 2005 Race Relations Forum—with
contest winners as part of the event.
Event:
The event will take place on Thursday, March 24, 2005 in Council Chambers and
will commemorate March 21st the International Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination.
