Heritage Week
• Marisa advised that letters were forwarded to all participants in last years event
along with School Boards and Associations inviting their participation again this
year.
• Friday evenings schedule is packed with performances.
• a number of spots are still available for Saturday and Marisa requested assistance
in acquiring further performers for that afternoon.
• 6 or 7 booths have been confirmed which is a sufficient amount.
• confirmation letters will be sent out.
• printed material is being prepared and the display unit has been booked.
• advertising has been placed on the website, LED sign and on the community page
of the News Advertiser, posters and a media release are being prepared.
• dignitaries J. Ecker, M.P.P., D. McTeague, M.P., Mayor Arthurs and John
Morrison— Durham Regional Police.

March 21" — Outreach Event
Canadian Half -Pints
• Marisa advised that Jane has been unable to confirm the participation of
the Canadian Half -Pints at the Outreach Event on March 21 ". It was
decided that further attempts to contact this organization would not be
undertaken.
Through Other Eyes
• A letter has been forwarded to the coordinator of the Through Other Eyes
requesting Monika to manage this workshop.
3. Mandate
The following is the original Mandate of The Pickering Advisory Committee on Race
Relations and Equity:
The purposes for which the Pickering Advisory Committee on Race Relations
and Equity has been formed are:
To acknowledge a municipal role in providing leadership and setting an
example in the community through cultural and race relations policies and
programs;
To affirm that a diversity of racial, ethnic and cultural origins, beliefs and
values, enhances, strengthens and enriches the community;
To anticipate and respond to the needs of the changing ethnic, racial and
cultural composition of the community in a timely manner;
To promote and foster respect, understanding, communication and
cooperation and equitable treatment among all citizens;
To promote attitudinal change towards systemic racism and discrimination in
the community;
To promote full and equal access to and provide the opportunity for
participation of all citizens in the social, cultural, economic and political
affairs of the community.

A review of this mandate took place and the following changes were made by the
Committee:
3rd paragraph now reads:
To affirm that a diversity of racial and ethnic origins, ethno- cultural and religious
beliefs and values, enhances, strengthens and enriches the community;
4th paragraph now reads:
To anticipate and respond to the changing needs of all segments of a diverse society
in a timely manner;
5th paragraph now reads:
To promote and foster respect, understanding, communication, cooperation and
equitable treatment among all citizens;
6th paragraph now reads:
To advocate positive measures towards attitudinal change concerning systemic racism
and all forms of discrimination in the community;
7th paragraph now reads:
To promote full access and equal opportunity for participation of all citizens in the
social, cultural, economic and political affairs of the community.
A revised draft of the Mandate will be forwarded to the Committee with the minutes
of this meeting.
4. Other Business
Bromley L. Armstrong, a political activist, will discuss his co- authored publication `
Bromley' at the Pickering Central Library on Tuesday, February 27th at 7 p.m.
5. Next Meeting
March 14th, 2001 at 7:00 p.m. in the Main Committee Room.
6. Adjournment
The meeting adjourned at 8:15 p.m.
