' e Officer Point of Contact: Coordinator, Health & Safety % - -' if Procedure Objective All employees of the City of Pickering shall ensure that the workplace, including individual work stations, hallways, walkways, exits, exit corridors, and other areas of the workplace, are kept and maintained free of obstructions and other hazards that may endanger workers or visitors to the workplace. The objective of this Procedure is to: reduce the potential for personal injury to workers of and visitors to the facilities of the City of Pickering; 2. ensure safe routes of exit for all persons in the workplace; 3. ensure safe routes of entry and exit for emergency service personnel who may be required to enter the workplace in an emergency situation; and 4. ensure compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and the Workplace Safety & Insurance Act. Index 01 Definitions 02 Procedures 01 Definitions No Definitions. 02 Procedures 02.01 Clear Access Areas and pathways to be free and clear from obstructions that may result in a potential hazard. 02.02 Fire Suppressant Equipment and Fire Alarms Clear access to any fire suppressant equipment, including fire extinguishers, fire hoses and fire alarms shall be maintained. All such equipment or alarms shall be clearly marked and visible. 02.03 Electrical Panels and Disconnects 02.04 Clear access to all electrical panels and disconnects shall be maintained. Exit Doors and Corridors All exit doors shall be clearly marked and appropriate night lighting indicating points of exit shall be on and clearly visible. Clear access to all points of exit shall be maintained, and all exit corridors shall be kept clear and free from obstructions. 02.05 Aisleways, Hallways and Walkways 02.06 All aisleways, hallways and walkways, both inside facilities and outside facilities and including pedestrian and vehicular passageways, shall be kept free of obstructions and hazards. Water or Fluid Spills Any spill or water or other fluid or liquid shall be promptly cleaned and all work areas, and in particular all walking surfaces, shall be cleaned and dried to ensure that the spill does not create a slipping hazard. When the nature of a spill requires the assistance of maintenance or custodial care, the area should be secured with appropriate floor signage and such care or assistance as is necessary shall be sought immediately. All employees should be aware of the closest spill station for the purpose of carrying out his or her responsibilities in this procedure. Procedure Title: Housekeeping Page 2 of 3 Procedure Number: HUR 130-009 02.07 Individual Work Stations Every individual work station shall be kept free and clear of obstructions, debris and trip hazards that may endanger any person, including the person who regularly works at the station, other workers, or visitors. All cords, cables and wires shall be placed in such a location so as to avoid the creation of trip hazard. When such placement is not possible, cords and wires should be placed in a manner to reduce the risk of a trip hazard, including inserting cabling into single protective strips, or taping cabling to the floor. Employees shall not store items under desks, or on top of cupboards or desk hutches. In particular, boxes and other heavy items shall never be stored on top of filing cabinets, bookcases, cupboards or window sills. Employees shall not leave filing cabinet or desk drawers open when not in use. Filing cabinets shall always be loaded from the bottom drawers to the top drawers and care shall be taken to ensure that the heaviest items are stored in the lowest drawers. 02.08 Supervisory Audits Every supervisor shall conduct a periodic audit of the work area for which the supervisor is responsible for the purpose of ensuring compliance with this City Procedure. Every supervisor is responsible to ensure that the standards set out in this City Procedure are followed. 02.09 Identifying and Reporting Hazards Every employee is responsible to ensure that workplace hazards are identified and brought to the attention of his or her supervisor. Where a hazard can be corrected simply by the employee, that employee must take reasonable steps to address and, where possible, eliminate the hazard. Procedure Title: Housekeeping Page 3 of 3.
