A BY-LAW TO PROHIBIT THE RUNNING AT LARGE OF DOGS WITHIN THE TOWNSHIP
OF PICKERING~ TO ESTABLISH A DOG POUND AND PROVIDE FOR REGULATIONS
REQUIRED IN CONNECTION THEREWITH~ AND TO REPEAL BY-LAW NUMBER 2379.
WHEREAS the Council of the Township of Picketing deems it advisable
that the running at large of dogs be prohibited in the Township
Pickering~ save as hereinafter provided;
AND WHEREAS the Council of the Township of Picketing deems it ad-
visable to establish a Dog Pound and to provide proper regulations
in connection therewith~ and that all dogs in the Township shall be
licensed as per Paragraph 15(A);
NOW THEREFORE BE IT ENACTED AND IT IS HEREBY ENACTED as a By-Law
the Corporation of the Township of Picketing by the Council thereof
as follows:
1. In this By-law
(a) "dog" means any dog~ male or female ~::-:~.~
. ~ (b) "owner" of a dog includes any who or harbours
person
possesses
a dog and "owns" and "owned" have a corresponding meaning.
(c) "Running at large" - a dog shall be deemed to be running at
large when not on a leash and found on a highway or other
public or private place~ other, than that of owner.
No owner shall allow any dog to run at large in Picketing Township.
2B The owner of any female dog~ while said dog is in heat~ shall
cause such dog to be confined in a building to which other dogs
may not have access. A female dog may be bred in a registered
kennel within the confines of a building.
3. All dogs shall be confined on a leash~ with the exception of
farm dogs and hunting dogs~ provided that both are working and
under control.
4. No person shall allow their dog to become a nuisance such as by
excessive barking or howling. Any person so aggrieved may
appear before a Justice of the Peace and swear out an Information
charging the owner with a breach of this section.
5. Any person shall be entitled to take charge of any dog
running at large and deliver the same to the Peund Keeper~the
Township o£ Picketing.
6. Any dog found ~ontrary to any of the provisions of this By-Law
shall be impounded.
(a) The said Dog Pound shall be opened daily for returning
dogs between the hours of 1:30 p. m. to 2:30 p. m. and 6
p. m. to.8 p. m. Monday ~o Friday e~IiTl~l,~ ~---- z
7. Ail dogs found by the said Dog Catcher r.unning at Iarge on
public or private property not owned by the owner of the said
dogs and dogs not under control of any person~ may be lodged in
the Dog Pound by the said Dog Catcher and he shall feed and water

8. The Dog Catcher shall: within twenty-four (24) hours from seizure
of any dog or within twenty-£our (24) hours from the time any dog

9. (a) If the owner of said dogs impomaded Ghat bear tags fails to
claim his or her dog or dogs and pay the Dog Catcher a Two
Dollar (82.00) impounding fee and Two Dollars (~2.00) per
day or any part of a day such dog or dogs are held by the
Dog Catcher, said dog or dogs shall be disposed of at the
end of the said seventy-two hour period as hereinbefore
provided and the owner shall have no recourse against the
Municipality or Dog Catcher.
(b) Should any dog be impounded by the Dog Catcher more than
once Jn any one calendar year, the owner: to claim and release
~ < such dog, shall pay the Dog Catcher Three Dollars (83.00) for
the second offence, Five Dollars (85.00) for each succeeding
offence, and Two Dollars (~2.00) per day or any part of a
day that the said dog is held by the Dog Catcher.
10. If there is no tag on any dog seized or taken or put in the pound~
the Pound Keeper shall dispose of any dog so seized or impounded

Ii. (a) Dogs that have to be destroyed shall be disposed of in such
manner as the Council may from time to time by resolution

(b) Dogs are to be destroyed at the end of the seventy-two

lq. No dog shall be returned to the owner if it has not a tag for the
current year. Any owner of a dog without a tag and any purchaser
of a dog shall obtain a tag for the current year before delivery
is made ~
1~ (a) License fees for dogs shall be as follows:
1st Male or Spayed Female Dog ~ 3.00
2nd and each succeeding Male or
Spayed Female Dog 6.00
/,~ 1st Female Dog 5.00
2nd and each succeeding Female Dog 10.00
(b) All licenses for dogs shall be secuI~d by 0wheTs not later
1~,A Penalty of not more than Fifty Dollars (~0.00) exclusive of
costs shall be imposed upon every person who contravenes the
/-5 provisions of this By-Law and every such penalty shall be
recoverable under the provisions of Yhe Summary Convictions Act.

~. This By-Law shall be effective as of the date of the passing of
this by-law.
~. By-Law Number 2379 be and the same is hereby repealed.
