BY-LAW NUMBER 1820/84
Being a by-law to amend By-law 851/78 to
authorize certain on-street parking of
vehicles operated by or for physically
handicapped persons and the issuing of
permits in respect thereof
WHEREAS Council enacted By-iaw 851/78 on July 10, 1978 to provide for
the regulating of parking, standing and stopping on highways or parts
of highways under the jurisdiction of the Corporation of the Town of
Pickering and on private and municipal property; and
WHEREAS Council enacted By-law 1755/83 on November 21, 1983 to amend
By-law 851/78 to authorize certain on-street parking of vehicles
operated by or for physically handicapped persons and the issuing of
permits in respect thereof; and
WHEREAS it is deemed expedient to redefine the term "physically handi-
capped person" to include a schedule of specific assistive devices;
NOW THEREFORE the Council of the Corporation of the Town of Pickering
HEREBY ENACTS as follows:
Paragraph (b) of subsection (1) of section 10a of By-law 851/78
is hereby deleted and the following substituted therefor:
(b)
"physically handicapped person" shall mean a person who is
completely and habitually dependent on the continued use of
or combination of any of the following assistive devices:

Walker
Cane(s) - used because of paralyzed mobility of that
person
Crutches
Wheelchair - either manual or motorized
External Prostheses - double, both legs, above knee
amputees
External Prosthesis - single, one leg, above knee
amputee with habitual use of a cane or crutch when
wearing prosthesis
Leg Braces double, both legs, full length
Leg Brace - single, one leg, with habitual use of a
cane or crutch when wearing brace
Internal Prostheses - replacement of both hip joints
Internal Prostheses - replacement of both knee joints
Oxygen tanks either on wheels or cart, etc.
BY-LAW READ a first, second and third time and finally passed this 16th
day of April, 1984.
