Delegations/Presentations 4.1 Community Climate Adaptation Draft Plan – Melanie Edmond, Coordinator, Sustainability, C. Whitaker, Manager, Sustainability & Strategic Environmental Initiatives Melanie Edmond, Coordinator, Sustainability and C. Whitaker, Manager, Sustainability & Strategic Environmental Initiatives appeared before the Committee via electronic connection. With the aid of a PowerPoint presentation M. Edmond spoke to the City of Pickering’s Community Climate Adaptation Project, noting the differences between climate adaptation versus mitigation. M. Edmond provided a brief overview of climate changes in the City of Pickering and in general, highlighting the severe weather experienced in Ontario. They discussed potential actions that could improve residents’ preparedness for weather-related emergencies and outlined various community partners to connect with. M. Edmond and C. Whitaker solicited Committee Members for suggestions regarding potential for future community partnerships and possible challenges pertaining to information dissemination. A brief discussion ensued between staff and Committee Members regarding; • additional community partnerships that could be considered; • identifying key challenges that the City would need to address; and, • whether Pickering’s stormwater drainage issues were being addressed in the Community Climate Adaptation plan. 5. New Business E. Knox introduced Brittany Brenner, Graphics Design Assistant and noted that they were the media and graphics support for the Community Safety and Well-Being portfolio. 5.1 Pickering Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee Implementation Forecast E. Knox provided that the Community Safety and Well-Being Plan was endorsed at the May 27, 2024, Council Meeting. E. Knox Page 3 of 5 Item/ Ref # Details & Discussion & Conclusion (summary of discussion) Action Items/Status (include deadline as appropriate) thanked Committee Members for their contributions and support and provided a brief summary of the Community Safety and Well- Being Plan five-year implementation forecast. A brief discussion ensued between Committee Members and Staff regarding: • what the percentage of the Indigenous population was in Pickering; and, • the possibility of connecting and collaborating with other Advisory Committees pertaining to overlapping action items. 5.2 Homelessness Subcommittee Update Subcommittee Chair, C. Paxton, provided a brief summary of three events that the subcommittee had the opportunity to collaborate on to advocate for Community Safety and Well-Being and promote community-wide Safety and Well-Being initiatives. Moved by A. Muhammad 1. That the Community Safety & Well-Being Advisory Committee endorses the Homelessness Subcommittee's collaboration with Dedicated Advocacy Resource Support (DARS) and the GAP Committee in the planning and support of the documentary screening of 'Us and Them'; 2. That the Community Safety & Well-Being Advisory Committee endorses the Homelessness Subcommittee's collaboration with Dedicated Advocacy Resource Support (DARS), Community Development Council of Durham and the GAP Committee in the planning and support of the October 10, 2024 World Homeless Day celebration; and; 3. That the Community Safety & Well-Being Advisory Committee endorses the Homelessness Subcommittee's collaboration with Animal Services in the planning and support of a free vet clinic for people experiencing housing insecurity. Carried 5.3 Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee Past & Upcoming Initiatives E. Knox provided a brief summary of recent and upcoming Safety and Community events done in collaboration with Durham Region Police Services. Knox provided an outline of the training that was being provided to the City’s Public Service staff pertaining to servicing residents experiencing dementia as well as De-escalation strategy training. Discussion ensued between Staff and Committee Members regarding cross referencing event scheduling with Pickering Schools, and the Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee participating in the 2024 Santa Clause Parade in collaboration with DARS and the Food Bank. 5.4 Proposed 2025 Meeting Dates Moved by J. Larendowicz That the Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee adopt the 2025 Meeting Schedule as presented. Carried 6. Other Business C. Bamford provided an overview of the Food Bank’s current initiatives and its collaborations with Feed the Need, Pac4Teens, and participation in Hunger Action Month. C. Bamford noted various locations where donation bins are located and identified the need for Halal items. They gave an overview of the Market Place style service that the Food Bank offered and highlighted how the Food Bank has evolved to service the needs of the City’s growing diversity. Committee Members noted that Whites Road and 3rd Concession was a dangerous intersection and required attention. C. Bamford to provide information pertaining to various Food Bank items to E. Knox. E. Knox to invite Engineering Staff to a CSWBAC Meeting to speak to road safety in Pickering. 7. Next Meeting Moved by C. Bamford 1. That the Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee hold a meeting on November 14, 2024; and, 2. That the December 12, 2024, scheduled Community Safety and Well-Being Advisory Committee Meeting be cancelled. Carried J. Currie to coordinate a CSWBAC Meeting on November 14 and cancel December 12, 2024.
