Thompson welcomed members of the Cultural Advisory Committee (CAC) and called the meeting to order. 2. Review and Approval of Agenda D. Thompson put forth a motion for adoption of the current agenda as circulated. Moved by M. McFarland. Cultural Advisory Committee Meeting Agenda June 18, 2024. 3. Disclosures of Interest There were no disclosures of interest to matters on the agenda. 4. Thompson put forth a motion for the adoption of the minutes as circulated. Moved M. McFarland Cultural Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes May 21, 2024. Carried 5. Presentations/Delegations There were no delegations for the meeting. 6. General Business 6.1 M. McFarland RE: Pickering Arts Culture Engagement (PACE) Subcommittee Update M. McFarland spoke to objectives and updates from the PACE subcommittee meeting held on June 6, 2024. 1. To date three Community Groups have agreed to meet with PACE in response to email correspondence and additional follow up emails will be sent. 2. The Subcommittee is preparing their Report to Council requesting funds for a Public Art Piece Installation. There were no questions. 6.2 S. Barakov RE: Celebration of Gordon Lightfoot Final Artist Selection for Endorsement S. Barakov presented the results of the Community votes and Public Art Jury’s deliberations on June 12, 2024, which awarded the Celebration of Gordon Lightfoot Public Art installation to Artist Geordie Lishman. The cost of the project is $60,000.00 plus HST and is included in the 2024 Public Art Reserve. The Public Art piece will be installed in May 2025. The installation date is a correction to Memo in the agenda which notes installation in 2024. J. St. Amant to distribute the letter in Appendix A for those groups who do not have email addresses on file to receive correspondence from PACE. What are the strings on the interactive guitar made of? Is there a possibility someone’s fingers be injured (cut) while playing the strings? 2. What is the anticipated care/maintenance of the Public Art piece? and, 3. What makes the art piece interactive? S. Barakov spoke to the following interactive components of the Art Piece: • The guitar strings can be played, and • The rear of the guitar is soft and plays like a drum. There were no further questions. S. Barakov requested endorsement from the Cultural Advisory Committee. Moved M. McFarland. Carried. 6.3 S. Barakov RE: Utility Box Wraps Final Artist Selection for Endorsement S. Barakov spoke to the Public Art Jury awarding the Utility Box Wrap project to Artist Rainier Naomi Magtalas. The funding for the Public Art Piece is $2,000. City Staff have requested feedback from the Seaton Community residents with regards to design concepts. The feedback is to be collected by City Staff in July and August 2024 during times when the City is offering Programming in the Community. A discussion ensued about endorsement. There were no questions from the CAC. S. Barakov requested endorsement from the Cultural Advisory Committee for the Artist only. The Artwork will be redesigned and presented the CAC for endorsement at a later date. S. Barakov to action confirming the safety of the interactive guitar strings on the art piece with the Artist Geordie Lishman. S. Barakov to action making arrangements for the Artist to engage with the Seaton Community Residents during summer programming in Rick Johnson Memorial Park. Moved Members of the CAC. Carried. 6.4 J. St. Amant RE: The 2024 Community Banner Series Top Five Artists for Endorsement. J. St. Amant spoke to the top five short-list Artist selected by the Public Art Jury who will be invited to submit conceptual designs for seven Community Banners. A discussion ensued about the Community Banner timelines and positioning across the City. J. St. Amant spoke to the following answers in response to questions put forth from CAC Members: 1. The selected banners are displayed for two years. 2. Artists can apply each year, to participate in the program, there is no limit to application or selection. There were no further questions. J. St. Amant requested endorsement from the Cultural Advisory Committee for the top five Artists; 1. Serene Chan; 2. Zuna Amir; 3. Pelly Smith; 4. Sima Naseem; and, 5. Roger Garcia. Moved A. Palmer. Carried. 6.5 K. Bradley RE: Pickering Museum Village (PMV) Updates K. Bradley spoke to programming and various projects at the PMV. • The Roots to Rebellion exhibit installations; • Pickering Heritage and Community Centre construction updates; • The Log House and Log Barn updates, the date for the Official Launch is August 16, 2024, from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm, invitations for the Page 5 of 6 Item/ Ref # Details, Discussion & Conclusion (summary of discussion) Action Items/Status (include deadline as appropriate) CAC Members will be shared through J. St. Amant; • Gather and Grow Mini exhibit update; • PMV Programming, Community Outreach and engagement updates; and • Summer programs being offered at the PMV. There were no questions. 6.7 J. St. Amant RE: Placemaking Chestnut Hill Developments Recreation Complex Digital Artwork Display Artist Selection for Endorsement. J. St. Amant spoke to background details of the Artwork Display: • Six Artist proposals were received; and, • Artist Matthew James Catalano was selected by the Placemaking Selection Committee who will receive an artist fee of $2,000. A brief discussion ensued with the following answers to questions from the CAC Members. • The Artist will create twenty digit artworks. • After two years the City will no longer have production rights to the artwork. There were no further questions. J. St. Amant requested endorsement from the Cultural Advisory Committee. Moved by Members of the CAC. Carried. 7. Correspondence There was no additional correspondence to report. 8. Other Business 8.1 The invitation for Members of the CAC to participate Cultural Fusion has been shared by J. St. Amant. A brief discussion ensued. 9.
