May 15, 2024.
PACE Subcommittee Members:
Michael McFarland - Chair

The Subcommittee decided that an email was needed so that the Subcommittee
could carry out its objectives. Our email is:
pacepickering@gmail.com
All subcommittee members have access to this email address.
Objectives of the PACE Subcommittee:
1) to recommend a plan to expand Cultural Fusion to include as many cultural
communities as possible.
2) to engage each of Pickering’s cultural communities in showcasing elements of
their culture (arts, music, dance, food and drink) to the community at large
through new initiatives, activities and partnerships.
3) to recommend public art that represents the Pickering Mosaic.

May 15, 2024
Our next topic of discussion was on Objective #1. We made some progress;
however, the subcommittee will report on this objective at a later date.
The Subcommittee has now developed a list of 16 Cultural Organizations, and they
will be contacted by the Subcommittee using email. (email attached as Appendix
A). By contacting these groups, we will work on Objectives 2 and 3. It is our hope
that at the beginning, we may receive 5 or 6 groups wishing to meet with us. Now
in order to have a good and open discussion with the Cultural organizations the
subcommittee feels it will require meeting space. We ask staff to assist in finding a
meeting space when and if required.
Next was a discussion regarding Objective 3. In that respect, we have one motion
to bring forward. This motion aligns with the Public Art Policy – to promote
community identity, reflect the diversity and community landscape, and celebrate
heritage.
Motion: The Cultural Advisory Committee forward a request to Cultural
Services to consider including a line item under Public Art in their next
budget to allow a call to artists to create art that represents our brand:
The Pickering Mosaic
Many cultures
One Community
The art should include pieces that can be displayed in all city buildings. As
part of this motion, we ask that the PACE Subcommittee and the Cultural
Advisory Committee be allowed to assist in preparing the call to artists.
Our next report will be at the June 18th meeting of the CAC.

several outreach opportunities each month throughout the summer, across Durham Region and
beyond.
Pickering Heritage Community Centre
Funding for this project provided by Canada Cultural Spaces Fund ($4,000,000) and the Investing
in Canada Infrastructure Program: Community, Culture and Recreation ($12,500,000)
• Footings are in and basement columns (walls) are being prepped for concrete, this work
continues.

The Log House and Log Barn rejuvenation project is nearly complete. Internal elements are being
installed the week of June 3 and June 10, with a plan to host programs as early as June 17,
provided the tension rods are installed in the log house and the accessible handrail on the ramp
from the Log House so that final inspection can be completed.
• Roof replacement on both structures is complete, which includes eaves and downspouts.
• Log Barn floor has been poured and has cured.
• Pickering Museum Village Exhibit staff have painted the entire inside of the Log House to
prepare for opening.
