1. Adoption of Minutes of Meeting of March 5, 1998
Minutes of Meeting of March 5 were adopted as circulated. Moved by Al
Goodall.
2. Presentation from the Public:
Mr. David Martin of Durham Nuclear Awareness spoke to the letter of March 22
from DNA to the Honourable N. Sterling in which was stated the organization's
disappointment with the Minister's decision not to hold an EA of the Pickering
Nuclear Generating Station.
3. Mark Rohlehr moved to receive for information correspondence from Durham
Nuclear Awareness concerning their request for an Environmental Assessment.
Approved.
4. Mark Rohlehr moved to receive for information the Minutes of the Meetings of
the Durham Nuclear Health Committee, Meeting#97-6. Approved
5. AECB Licensing Update.
A News Release from the Atomic Energy Control Board, dated March 26, 1998
announcing recent licensing decisions was distributed.

6. Discussion of Pickering Nuclear Environmental Initiatives.
Ms. Judy Ryan, Manager of Health, Safety and Environment delivered a
presentation in which she focused on the historical environmental management
performance, the environmental performance objectives and performance
improvement plans of Pickering Nuclear. Ms. Laurie Swami, Section Manager,
Environment provided an update on environmental issues (copies of the
presentations are attached).
Questions and discussion occurred throughout the presentations concerning public
consultation, independent assessment of studies and use of focus groups. It was
questioned that the Environmental Review may to be too narrowly focused on the
physical environment. Mr. Enyolu commented that there must be a holistic,
comprehensive approach including extensive consultation and the study should be
broader than the physical environment. Committee comments with respect to the
overall program were supportive of the more open direction the plant is following.
7. Other business.
A copy of correspondence from Dr. Evans Enyolu to the editor titled`Beyond
Pickering-Ontario Hydro Laison Meetings"dated April 1, 1998 and a copy of
a letter from the Honourable N. Sterling to Mayor Wayne Arthurs dated March
12, 1998 were received.
The date of the next meeting of the Pickering Liaison Committee was tentatively
set for Thursday, June 18, 1998 in the Main Committee Room of The Civic
Complex at 7:30 p.m.
8. The meeting adjourned about 8:00 p.m. Participants then toured the plant and the
used fuel dry storage area.
