A Meeting of Council was held on MONDAY, the EIGHTEENTH day of AUGUST,
1958, at EIGHT o'clock in the evening.

The following CORRESPONDENCE was read:
1. Reservations have been confirmed by the Lord Elrln Hotel. Ottawa, for
Ontario Municipal Association Convention - one double and one single
room - August 31st to September 3rd, 1958.
2. DeDartment of A~riculture, Societies Branch, advises that repairs and
renovations are eligible for 25% Capital Expense grant. This inform-
ation was requested in connection with the proposed work on Claremont
Community Hall.
The following PERSONS, on MOTION, were heard:
1. Mr. W. ThomDson appeared on behalf of Messrs. Fisher and Young, the
gentlemen interested in establishing a silver and brass plating works
on the Mrs. P. England property on Fairport Road North.
A Resolution permitting this use had been not approved by Council at
meeting of August 7th, 1958, after Township Planning Consultant had
strongly recommended this use be not permitted. Mr. Thompson asked
th~~.tþis decision be reoonsidered. He stated that on the strength
of ~~letter indicating approval, his clients had gone ahead with
arrangements.

A proposed Motion by Mr. Scott granting permission for this specific
non-conforming use failed to receive a seconder. The motion was thus
lost¡and previous decision stood.
Mr. D. Lennin~. who lives in Lot 33, Concession 1, had requested a
consent on the most northerly lot he owns, and through which runs the
Petticoat Creek. This consent was refused by Planning Board at meeting
of August 1st, 1958, Mr. tenning appealed to Council to help him secure
a reversal on this rUling. His claim was that the decision should have
depended on an Engineering report, which report was claimed by him to
be favourable.

(3) Stated that the Township School Attendance Officer was not well
known to School Board and that Board would like to know more about

(4) Invited a representative of Council to a Reception for the teaching
staff of School Area No.2 to be held at Vaughan Willard School at
4:30 P.M. September 4th, 1958.

5 Complained of a half-built building on Victory Drive, Fairpor being v
an eyesore and a disgraoe to the community.

4. Mr. Vizelv disoussed the proposed work on Claremont Community Hall.
He stated that they expect to spend at least $5,000.00,this fall
and asked if the Township could indicate the amount of grant it would
be prepared to provide.
5. Mr. Reed of Sunnyslope, West Rouge, complained of potholes at various
places on West Rouge roads. He claimed his child and Mr. S. Kaskiw's
child had both been hurt when their bicycles hit one of these potholes
on Taylor Drive. He enquired about making a claim.
6. Mr. Arthur Carlton wished to go on record that the Garbage Dump area
was in an extremely dry condition and there was a fire danger. He
stated he would only burn in mornings before wind got up, and would
use every possible precaution.

RESOLUTION NUMBER 147
MOVED by Mr. Stewart, seconded by Mr. Pugh, that the Township of Pickering
make a grant of $1,000.00 to the Claremont Park Board for the reconstruction
of the Claremont Hall providing the Claremont Park Board have firm commit-
ments for the balance of the funds and that a minimum of $5,000.00 be spent
on the building. CARRIED
CLERK'S INSTRUCTIONS
1. Re Lenning - Clerk to contact members of Planning Board Committee who
inspected lot in question, and to report their recommendations to Reeve.
2. Mr. J. Chapman to take immediate action to have potholes in West Rouge v
repaired.
3. Prepare a Resolution to authorize payment of $100.00 to Mr. F. Poynton

re purchase of strip of property for road widening per Resolution No. 127.
On MOTION of Mr. Pugh, Council 8I6ourned to a Road Committee Meeting.
