Lawson, in the Chair J. S. Scott Edgar James J. S. Chapman Glenn Julian Robert L. Stewart L. T. Johnston, Clerk The fO.llowing CORRESPONDENCE was read: 1. Rouge Highl~n~subdivis:j...Q!! advise that they intend to proceed with registration-bond, and pay 50% of cost of paving part of East Avenue. Metro-Toront~Qopservation AutQority - 1957 appropriation for Township $ 2,684.09. 2. 3. Copy of letter, Proctor. Redfern and Lau~hlin to Marino Construction Company directing certain work to be done on Rouge Water Contract before 5% holdback will be forwarded. 4. Canadian National Jlai.lways will build new fence at Chesterton Shores. 5. Street Numbering: Ajax - North and South Highway 401 and east and west of Harwood. Whitby North and South of Highway 2 Town and east and west of Main Street The following PERSONS, on MOTION, were heard: 1. Oliver Crockford headed a delegation of about fifteen persons who objected to the closing of Pickering Beach Road at Highway 401, claiming that such closing would greatly in~on~enience and be a financial hardship on his delegation. He presented a petition of some fifteen owners whom he claimed would be adversely affected. Roger QOn!nÌ, acting for J. E. Lusted, claimed that as his client lived north of Highway 401 at Station Road and operated his farm south of 401, it would be impossible to operate such a business without a By-Pass road. Mr. Lloyd, Whose home is on the south half of Lot 1, Concession 1, claimed that a clover leaf or an overhead on Town Line would injure his home value. The Reeve advised him that the passing of the closing By-Law would not affect him and his problem could be dealt with if, as and when changes at this point were contemplated. 2. 3. 4. John Mills of Ajax produced photos of accidents on Highway 401 at level crossings. Mr. Sims, County EQgineer, stated the present vehicle count at Brock Road is 2,000 plus per day on north side, and about 1,000 on south side and if this traffic appreciably increased within three years, it may never be closed. 5. 6. Mr. Comport, of Fire Area No.1, felt his Committee should have more control over money matters and that they should be permitted to accept tenders for blacktopping driveway to Fire Hall. Council pointed out they were pleased with the work of the Fire Committee members, but the Act did not provide for their making financial commitments on their own. MOVED by Mr. Scott, seconded by Mr. Stewart, that the Council go on record as having every confidence in the work of the Fire Committee of ~ Fire Area No.1. CARRIED - 2 - 7. Mr. Stenabough and Mrs. Gibbs objected to Mr. Staudinger being permitted to build a house in watercourse beside their homes in Plan 330, east side of Fairport Beach Road, with the possibility that more water will be turned on them. They are not satisfied with Township's work in endeavouring to change watercourse. Councillor Julian agreed to meet Mr. Stenabough March 23rd at 12 o'clock noon. 8. Mr. Harpell complained that Mr. Thompson had ordered the Cochrane family to vacate his converted tool shed. 9. ~r. Axhor~ stated he had never been paid for damages to his car caused in April, 1956 road break-up. 10. Mr'. Fail"grie_v~J! complained about water drainage and lack of gravel on Spruce Hill Road. 11. Mr. Godßo~. Township Engineer, presented an agreement whereby Claude Smith agreed to crush 28,000 yards gravel from Township gravel pits at 50¢ per yard. MOVE~ by Mr. Scott, seconded by Mr. Julian, that George Blacktopp be paid I. 1 for 1995 yards gravel crushed at 45¢ per yard, subject to release from any ~ claims to Township Crusher and a check to see if all bills for crusher parts paid. CAR~IED MOVE~ by Mr. Julian, seconded by Mr. Scott, that Claude Smith be given contract l~v to crush 28,000 yards Township gravel at 50¢ per yard, subject to approval of Mr. Boucher. CARRIED Mr. Stewa~ reported that his Fire Committee had met the Ajax Fire Committee and agreed that Ajax Fire Brigade would serve School Section No.1, south half of Lot 6, Concession 1, and Plan 377 for a 4 Mill tax rate, subject to approval of Ajax Council and owners in proposed area. BY-LAW NUMBER ~2J3 (Third Reading) The Committee of the Whole arises and reports By-Law Number 2213 to close certain portions of road allowances in the Township of Pickering as read. Mr. Scott, seconded by Mr. James, moves that the report of the Committee of the Whole on B~-Law Number 2213 be adopted, and that the said By-Law be now read a Third time and PASSED; that the Reeve ànd Clerk sign the same, and the Seal of the Corporation be affixed thereto. CARªIED YEAS: Messrs. James, Chapman, Lawson, Scott. NAYS: Messrs. Stewart & Julian. CLERK'S INSTRUCTIONS 1. Get correspondence re Fire Committee No.1 as originally set up. 2, Get report from Mr. Thompson re Harpell's tenant being required to vacate. 3. Mr. Godson report March 25th re drainage on Spruce Hill Road. 4. Get correspondence re claimed damages by Mr. Axhorn in April, 1956. On MOTION of Mr. Julian, the meeting adjourned.
