An Emergent Meeting of Council was held on MONDAY, the NINTH day of MAY, 1955
at EIGHT o'clock in the evening.
PRESENT: George T. Todd, in the Chair

The following CORRESPONDENCE was read:
1. Assistant Minister of PUblic Works acknowledging receipt of Clerk's letter
protesting granting rights to Highland Creek Sand and Gravel to mine gravel
from Lake at Duffin's Creek.
2. Women's Auxiliary, Ajax and Pickering General Hospital, asking permission
to hold a tag day, Saturday, June 4, 1955.
3. Department of Hi~hwaYs cheque $ 168.53, being 50% grant on $ 337.07
overspent, 1954 By-Law.
4. F.-.J...!_Prouse, advising that in his opinion the cracks in plaster of new
Police Building are not serious and could be expected from cement blocks
laid in the winter. He thinks the flower box at door should be straightened.
5. Rodger Conant, asking damages of $ 75.00 for Paul Mulack, Plan 331, Lot 92,
who claims he suffered loss because of Township ditches.
6. Highland Creek Sand and"Çravel, stating that they would co-operate in
keeping up the road from Squire's Beach to No. 401 Highway.
The following PERSONS, on MOTION, were heard:
1.
Mr. Smith and delegation of Squire's Beach, protested a license being granted
to Highland Creek Sand and Gravel to mine gravel from:Lake Ontario at Duffin's
6reek on grounds of noise, dust, destroying beauty, danger to children, danger
to Squire's Beach lake front, and damage to roads.
Mr._C9l~, Solicitor for Highland Creek Sand and Gravel, stated that his firm
was prepared to assist with roads, that they had a permit to build a crushing
plant from Town of Ajax and that they had not drawn gravel out of plant except
for local road. Would like a clarification of our protest to go to Ottawa.

~r. Beckerle~Production Manager Highland Creek Sand and Gravel, reported that
he expected he daily poduction of the County to be 1000 yards daily, which mig]
average 100 truckloads daily.

Mr. Walker, of Civil Engineering Developments, stated his company was prepared
to spend up to $ 80,000.00 on water if he were granted a 300 housing developmen
around Liverpool. Mr. Walker was assured that he would be given a definite
answer on Ajax water proposal by May 31, 1955.

Mr. Playford again aøkeQ that deep ditch which was dug through his property at
Frenchman's Bay is dangerous and he would like it made safe by Township.
6. Mr. Playford. Jr., asked that the dangerous ditch through his father's
property be eliminated as the water was stagnant and came from cesspools.

7. Mrs. Spragett, neighbour of Mr. Playford, stated that her two year old child
fell in the Playford ditch and was nearly drowned.
Council agreed that something must be done and directed Clerk to have Mr.
Ward report.
8. Mr. W. Bers:man;objected to speed of cars and dust on Island Road and asked
q'esttonø re Chesterhill Development Agreement.

MOVED by Mr. Newman, seconded by Mr. Lawson, that Township approve a tag day
for Women's Auxiliary, Ajax General Hospital, on Saturday, June 4, 1955.

CLERK'S INSTRUCTIONS ~

1. Have Mr. Moore search^Police Building for liens.
2. Pay R. B. Wells $1500.00 if no liens on Police Building
3. Try to get ruling on 8 tons, Class "B" roads maximum and advise Police
to take to Court all overloading after May 18th.
BY-LAW NUMBER 2091
Mr. Lawson, seconded by Mr. Pugh, moves for leave to introduce a By-Law of
the Township of Pickering to designate an area of subdivision control over
registered plans, and that same now be read a first time.
Mr. Lawson, seconded by Mr. Scott, moves that By-Law Number 2091 to
designate an area of subdivision control over registered plans, be now
read a second time and that Council go into Committee of the Whole thereon.
The Committee of the Whole arises and reports the By-Law as read.
Mr. Lawson, seconded by Mr. Pugh, moves that the Report of the Committee of
the Whole on By-Law Number 2091 be adopted, and that the said By-Law be now
read a Third time and PASSED; that the Reeve and Clerk sign the same, and
that the Seal of the Corporation be affixed thereto. CARRIED
BY-LAW NUMBER 2092
Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Newman, moves for leave to introduce a By-Law of the
Township of Pickering to expropriate lands for School Section No.7, and that
same now be read a first time.
Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Lawson, moves that By-Law Number 2092 to expropriate
lands for School Section No.7, be now read a second time, and that Council
go into Committee of the Whole thereon.
The Committee of the Whole arises and reports the By-Law as read.
Mr. Pugh, seconded by Mr. Scott, moves that the Report of the Committee of the
Whole on By-Law Number 2092 be adopted, and that the said By-Law be now read a
Third time and PASSED; that the Reeve and Clerk sign the same, and that the
Seal of the Corporation be affixed thereto. CARRIED
On MOTION of Mr. Newman, the meeting adjourned.
