Welcome & Introductions
Councillor Ryan welcomed the members of the Pickering Race
Relations and Equity Committee and extended a special
welcome to the Ajax Race Relations Committee. Introductions
followed by all in attendance.

Ontarians.With Disability Act

-Accessibility Advisory Committee Update
Marisa provided the following history on the formation of the
Pickering Race Relations Committee:
• formed in 1987
• committee members included representatives from both
Boards of Education, libraries and the police
• focused on Race Relations issues
• the mandate was broadened in 2000 to look at equity
which then led to accessibility

Marisa advised that a new committee known as the
Accessibility Advisory Committee has been struck under the
Ontarians with Disability Act. The Committee, at present,
consists of two disabled members who have reviewed and are
pleased with what has been done to date. More members are
required for this Committee.
3.
We All Are Immigrants, Event
This event will take place on Sunday, June 15 from 12:00 PM to
4:30 PM at the Pickering Museum Village.
Marisa advised that this event was initiated by the Pickering
Museum Village Board and that a number of events have been
arranged with interested participants. She further advised that
more participation would be welcome.

Roundtable
Paul Pakyam, Chair of the Ajax Race Relations Committee
outlined the history of this Committee:
• six to eight years in existence
• showcase diversity in Ajax
• the following multi - cultural events are held:
➢ Black History Week in February — to honor
individuals within the community
➢ Education Resource Fair — held in the fall —
participants include teachers, kids and suppliers
➢ three or four forums a year to discuss issues that
affect their community — Dr. Francis Henry has
agreed to be a speaker at one of the forums and
Lincoln Alexander will be a speaker at a fall forum
➢ a Youth Mentoring program will be held
The Ajax Race Relations Committee is involved in various
events, as well as, having a web site that receives enquiries
from around the country.
A lengthy discussion took place with respect to encouraging
more of the community to become involved in committee work
and the means by which to inform the community of the wide
range of events the committee undertakes.
It was suggested that events be promoted on the City/Town's
community page of the News Advertiser as well as through
flyers /magazines, Cable 10, schools, etc.

Paul recommended the formation of a small working group to
discuss the activities of each of the Ajax and Pickering Race
Relations Committees. This group would meet on a bi- monthly
basis.
